Men’s ice hockey falls to Maine in season opener

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men's ice hockey team opened its season with a 4-1 loss to Maine Friday night at the Hart Center Rink
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Maine got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the first period, capitalizing on a major that was assessed to the Crusaders.
  • Junior Matt Kursonis netted the first goal of the season for Holy Cross at the 14:42 mark of the second period, taking the puck the length of the ice off a deflection by sophomore Ben Riche on the penalty kill.
  • Maine re-extended their lead to two with the lone 5-on-5 goal of the game six minutes into the third period, before tacking on an empty net goal with 1:40 to go.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Sophomore Danick Leroux recorded 26 saves in the contest.
  • Holy Cross blocked 21 shots to Maine's six, led by senior Will Elias who tallied seven.
  • The last time Holy Cross scored a shorthanded goal was on Nov. 8, 2025 when Michael Abgrall netted one against Niagara.

  • The two teams will meet again tomorrow night, Saturday, Oct. 3, at the DCU Center for the Cross City Classic at 7 p.m.
