Sophomore Chandler Dicks broke the 60-year-old long jump school record with a mark of 7.21m to win the event at the Alden Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 7. He helped the Crusaders to the team title (1st out of 7 teams) with a total of 107 points. His efforts earned him Patriot League Field Athlete of the Week (Dec. 2, 2024).

Dicks and Antoine break records to lead Crusaders at Alden Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I.— The Holy Cross track and field teams had a great start in the indoor season opener at the Alden Invitational hosted by Brown on Saturday, Dec. 7 with the men's team winning the meet and the women's team finishing in second out of seven competing squads.

The men opened their indoor season with 107 points and the women tallied 117.5 points in the meet.

MEN'S MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Sophomore Chandler Dicks broke the 60-year-old long jump school record with a mark of 7.21m to win the event. The previous record (7.19m) was set by Dick Maiberger in March of 1964. Freshman Tireni Asenuga also competed in the event finishing eighth (6.82m).
  • Freshman Khalil Antoine broke the triple jump school record with a mark of 15.02m to clinch second in the event and in his collegiate debut. The previous record (14.98m) was set by Michael Pichay at the NEICAAA Indoor Championship Feb. 1, 2019. Sophomore Logan Mott also competed in the event and came in third (13.60m, PB) followed by freshman LJ Hines in fifth (13.35m).
  • Dicks won the high jump with a mark of 1.97m. Senior Kevin Yatsuhashi also competed in the event placing fourth and setting a new personal best (1.92m).
  • Senior captains Brian Fennelly (8.26, first) and Josh Exantus (8.26, second) followed by Antoine (8.27, third) finished 1,2,3 in the 60m hurdles final. Hines also made it to the final coming in sixth (9.11). 
  • Junior captain Liam Lyons won the mile (4:16.53) and sophomore Joseph Mahon placed fourth (4:19.82).
  • Senior captain Aidan Bergin claimed third and set a personal best in the 60m dash finals (6.93).
  • Senior captain William Schimitsch set a personal best in the 3000m (8:40.11, third).
  • Freshman Brendan Rogers took seventh in the 300m (36.08) followed by fellow freshman Josh Gentchos in eighth (36.09).

WOMEN'S MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Senior captain Haley Murphy won the 500m (1:15.77) and senior Helene Cummings took fourth (1:19.74). Both set new personal bests in the event.
  • Senior captain Abby Hughes won the mile (5:07.81), junior captain Alex Lusby took fourth (5:14.22) and sophomore Siena Brunetti came in sixth (5:16.47, PB).
  • Senior captain Maura Switzer won the pole vault (3.80m) and sophomore Alyssa Peasley came in right behind her in second (3.55m). Sophomore Shannon Briseno also competed in the event and tied in eighth (3.40m). Peasley and Briseno both set new a personal bests.
  • Freshman Abby Desmarais clinched second (7.68) in the 60m dash finals followed by senior Ella Grey in fourth (7.75) and junior Giavanna Ciaravino in sixth (7.83). Grey and Ciaravino both set new personal bests.
  • Grey claimed second in the 60m hurdles final (8.74) followed by junior Celia Kulis in third (8.75) for a personal best.
  • Desmarais took fourth in the 300m (40.81), just a second off the school record, and freshman Danielle DiEsso finished eighth (41.19).
  • Kulis placed fourth in the high jump (1.56m) and Peasley finished sixth (1.51m).
  • Sophomore Annabel Murray (3:08.19, sixth, PB), freshman Chloe Dibb (3:11.52, seventh) and junior Abby Granrath (3:12.04, eighth) all competed in the 1000m.
  • Freshman Victoria McGowan came in sixth in the triple jump (10.49m).
  • Freshman Lily Deforge (11.87m, sixth) and sophomore Gabby Paolella (11.84m, seventh) competed in the shot put.
  • Junior Ester Mokonchu set a personal best in the weight throw (15.60m, eighth).
  • The 4x400m relay team including junior Murphy, Lusby, Cummings and sophomore Maeve O'Sullivan claimed second place with a time of 4:03.86.

NEXT UP:

  • The Holy Cross track and field teams will head to Hanover, N.H. to compete at the Dartmouth Invitational from Dec. 13 to 14.
