Men's track and field earns third place in outdoor opener

SMITHFIELD, R.I.— The Holy Cross men's track and field team opened up the outdoor season at the Bryant Invitational on Friday and Sunday. The team tallied 77 points, earning a third-place finish out of 16 competing squads.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Freshman Joseph Metzger started the weekend with a sixth-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 14.42m on Friday. 
  • Senior Liam Christman and sophomore William Schimitsch wrapped up the first day in the 10,000m. Christman finished fifth with a time of 31:43.02, followed Schimitsch in seventh with a time of 31:46.63.
  • Junior Mike Mazzocca won the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.51, an IC4A qualifying time. He was followed by sophomores Josh Exantus in fifth (15.33) and Brian Fennelly in sixth (15.54). Later, Mazzocca finished third in the high jump with a mark of 1.90m. 
  • Sophomore Stephen Joseph clinched sixth in the 400m with a time of 51.24. 
  • Junior Chris Barone finished third in the 100m with a personal best time of 10.84, a New England qualifying time. He, then, set a personal record in the 200m with a time of 22.29, placing seventh.
  • In the 100m dash, freshman Nyeoti Punni finished ninth followed by sophomore Aidan Bergin in tenth.
  • Senior Jack Welch claimed fifth in the 800m with a time of 1:55.45.
  • Senior Sean Flaherty took first in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.62, closely followed by senior Cameron Lloyd in fifth at 58.62. 
  • Junior Will McAlpine finished fifth in the javelin with an IC4A qualifying mark of 62.00m. 
  • Barone, Punni, Bergin and Fennelly claimed second in the 4x100 relay with a time of 42.27, only .09 seconds shy of the school record. 
  • The 4x400 relay with Joseph, junior Rigoberto Alfonso, freshman Quinlan Perry and Fennelly placed sixth with a time of 3:27.66.
NEXT UP:
  • The Holy Cross men's track and field team returns to action of Saturday, April 8. The team will split the roster as select competitors will travel to Amherst, Mass. for the UMass Minutemen Invitational or to George Mason in Fairfax, Va.
