Men's golf competes at Doc Gimmler, Ryan T. Lee Collegiate

The Holy Cross men's golf team split up its team over the weekend to compete on Sept. 11 and 12 at two separate events: the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate at the Hop Meadow Country Club in Simsbury, Conn., and the Doc Gimmler at the Bethpage Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.

"We wanted to provide everyone on the team with the opportunity to compete in a college event early in the season," said head coach Steve Napoli. "By splitting the team into two squads at the Ryan T. Lee Collegiate and the Doc Gimmler at Bethpage State Park, we learned that we have more depth than in recent years."

Junior Juan Suau had a strong performance for the Crusaders at the Ryan T. Lee Collegiate, finishing with a score of 145 to tie for 16th. The Crusaders as a whole finished in a tie for 10th out of 16 teams.

"Our volunteer assistant Leo Kling coached the team at the Ryan T. Lee, which produced a great three under par performance (69) by Juan Suau on Sunday, including birdies on four consecutive holes on the front nine," Napoli said. "Freshmen Grant Passi and Nolan Schuermann each shot one over par (73) on Sunday, a great start to their college career."

At the Doc Gimmler, the Crusaders placed 13th, led by junior Christian Emmerich and senior Jack Phelan, who finished in a tie for 44th with a score of 219.

"At the Doc Gimmler, our team played steadily from tee to green," Napoli said. "We competed against an extremely talented field against some of the best teams in the Northeast. Our course management and ball striking throughout the tournament was pretty solid, but we experienced a weekend in which the putts simply did not drop. Twelve of the 15 scores we posted were between 71 and 74, a sign of good things to come. Jack Phelan improved each day with rounds of 74-73-72, and freshman Owen Egan proved he can play at the college level and shot 74-74-72 in his first college event."

UP NEXT:
  • The Crusaders will be back in action on October 10 through 12 for the Bucknell Invitational.
