WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team concluded the 2019 season in the Patriot League Quarterfinal at #18 Army West Point, 14-5. Sean Mullaney and Drew Babiak each tallied two goals in the game, but the Crusaders could not hold off the Black Knights.

 

The Crusaders (7-7) jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the opening quarter. Drew Babiak opened the scoring with his 18th of the season and an assist from Will Spangenberg at 13:40. Sean Mullaney added a man-up goal at 10:06 to give Holy Cross an early 3-0 lead.

 

At 6:57, Army (11-4) started a three goal run that ended at 4:35, to take a 3-2 lead. Holy Cross responded less than 40 seconds late as Justin Lynskey scored on an individual effort, to push the game to 3-3. With 32 seconds to play in the opening quarter Army went ahead, 4-3.

 

The Black Knights outscored the Crusaders, 3-1, in the second quarter. Mullaney added his second of the game at 11:45 and was assisted by Connor Waldron.

 

The third quarter was all Army as the Black Knights put up two more goals to take a 9-4 lead.

 

With the Crusaders facing a five goal deficit, Jonathan Tesoro jumped out on defense for extra pressure. The Black Knights were able to score five times in the final 15 minutes of action and keep Holy Cross off the board. Babiak closed out the scoring with a goal along the crease with 1:48 to go in the game, 14-5.

 

NOTES & NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross outshot Army, 39-26.
  • The Crusaders went 1-5 on the extra man opportunities.
  • Dan O'Connell went 22-for-19 at the faceoff.

 

CRUSADER LEADERS:

  • Chris Conlin recorded a team-high four caused turnovers.
  • O'Connell led with 11 ground balls, while Will Murphy and Conlin picked up five.
