BALTIMORE, Md. – The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team was defeated by #1 Loyola (Md.), 19-15, despite a great comeback effort. Four Crusaders tallied a hat trick in the offensive battle. The Crusaders trailed through the first two quarters but closed the significant gap and pushed the game to a one-goal differential multiple times in the third quarter.

 

Loyola Maryland (4-1) started off the game with two quick goals, leading 2-0, with 11:37 to play in the first quarter. Holy Cross (2-3) responded as Sean Mullaney scored twice in under one minute. The Greyhounds added three more goals to close the quarter, 5-2.

 

Loyola continued their scoring run into the second frame as they piled on two more goals, 7-2, at the 9:17 mark. Justin Lynskey scored his third goal of the season at 8:42, followed by Kevin Kodzis at 4:33. The Greyhounds ended the Crusader burst and pushed the game to 7-4. Kodzis found the back of the net again as he struck with 2:30 to play, 8-5. The Greyhounds ended the frame with their ninth goal of the game.

 

Holy Cross kicked off the third quarter with a four goal run. With three goals from freshman Will Spangenberg, the Crusaders outscored the Greyhounds, 6-3. Kodzis also added two goals in the third quarter as Holy Cross battled to a 12-11 deficit. The Crusaders pushed the game to a one-goal differential twice in the quarter, making the game 10-9 at the 8:21 mark. Holy Cross capped of the third quarter scoring at 3:10 and went into the final 15-minutes down one goal, 11-10.  

 

Loyola dominated the opening of the fourth quarter, scoring four goals to take a 16-11 lead. Holy Cross continued offensive pressure as Drew Babiak and Connor Waldron both scored. With Holy Cross playing an aggressive offense, Loyola was able to outscore the Crusaders 3-2 in the final six minutes of play and end the game, 19-15.

 

NOTES & NUMBERS:

  • Jonathan Tesoro made six saves in the first half. Tesoro finished with 11 saves.
  • The Crusaders had 14 turnovers while the Greyhounds had 17.
  • Dan O'Connell won 18-of-37 faceoffs.

 

CRUSADER LEADERS:

  • Will Spangenberg and Justin Lynsky put up six points in the game, each marking career-highs. Each recorded three goals and three assists.
  • Kevin Kodzis led the Crusader scoring with four goals.
  • Four Crusaders tallied a hat trick in the game: Kodzis, Spangenberg, Lynskey, and Sean Mullaney.
  • Will Murphy paced the Crusader defense with five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
