PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team defeated Brown in the final second of the second overtime period to capture its third win of the 2019 season, 11-10. Drew Babiak completed his hat trick with the game-winning tally with 1.2 seconds remaining in the second overtime frame.
Brown (3-3) scored the first goal of the game at 13:01, but the Crusaders (3-5) responded with two goals of their own. Sean Mullaney scored at 11:46 followed by an Andrew Helfrich man-up goal at 6:23 to take a 2-1 lead. The Bears put up two more goals to close the first quarter ahead, 3-2.
The second quarter was all Holy Cross as Dan O'Connell started the Crusader scoring at 14:41 for his second of the season. Brown went ahead, 4-3, at 13:06, but Holy Cross put away four-consecutive goals. Drew Babiak scored back-to-back goals at 12:25 and 9:14 to give the Crusaders the lead. Mullaney added his second of the night and Connor Waldron capped of the first half scoring with 52 seconds to play in the quarter, 7-4.
After a strong second quarter from the Crusaders, Brown outscored Holy Cross, 3-1, in the third. Mullaney completed his fourth hat trick of the season at the 4:48 mark. The Crusaders held a narrow 8-7 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation.
Mullaney continued the scoring with his fourth of the game at 14:14 and the Crusaders went ahead, 9-7. Brown rattled off three consecutive goals to take the lead, 10-9, with 2:00 minutes left in regulation to play.
Justin Lynskey, who had already tallied three assists in the game, found the back of the net with one minute remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime, 10-10.
The Crusaders recorded four shots on goal between the two overtime frames before Babiak was able to complete his hat trick and secure the Holy Cross victory with 1.2 seconds remaining in the second overtime period.
