BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Holy Cross men's lacrosse team came up short this afternoon against the University of Vermont Catamounts, 7-9. Will Spangenberg finished the game with two goals and one assist, tallying three points for the Crusaders. Sean Mullaney also added two goals on the game. Dan O'Connell recorded eight ground balls. The Crusaders now stand 0-2 on the season, and Vermont improves to 2-1.
Holy Cross got to a rough start being down 4-0 in the first quarter, when Sean Mullaney scored the first goal for the Crusaders with six seconds left, assisted by Will Spangenberg. At the end of the first quarter Holy Cross trailed 4-1.
Vermont scored a quick goal at the beginning of the second quarter and was then matched by Will Spangenberg when he got his first goal of the day with 10:21 remaining in the half.
Vermont opened up the second half with a goal making the score 6-2. With 8:26 remaining in the third quarter, Justin Lynskey scored his first goal of the day, along with another Spangenberg goal to end the quarter. Vermont led 7-4 at the end of the third.
Vermont started the fourth quarter with a goal, then the Crusaders came out on fire scoring three goals from Sean Mullaney, Drew Babiak, and Connor Waldron. Holy Cross fell short ending the game down, 7-9.
NOTES & NUMBERS:
- Holy Cross led the game in ground balls, 18-16, over the Catamounts.
- The Crusaders won 17 out of the 20 face offs of the game.
- Holy Cross outshot Vermont 36-33.
CRUSADER LEADERS:
- O'Connell went 15 for 17 from the X, pulling in eight ground balls. O'Connell's .882 win percentage marked a new career high.
- Jonathan Tesoro recorded 13 saves in net for the Crusaders.
- Matt Farrell led the team with two caused turnovers.
- So far this season, Will Spangenberg leads the Crusaders with four points.
