WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team defeated Colgate, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at Hart Turf Field. The Crusaders, winners of three in a row, improve to 5-4 on the year and 2-1 in Patriot League play. The Raiders fall to 2-9 and 0-3 in league action.

After a scoreless first half, Olivia Venezia would put Holy Cross ahead when she intercepted a pass in the third quarter, drove hard into the circle, and unleashed a backhanded shot that beat Colgate's Anna Unger in goal.

The Crusaders would double their lead late in the fourth when Sinead Walsh found a streaking Minke Koomen who took a one-touch shot from five yards out and lifted it over Unger to seal the victory.

The Holy Cross defense was strong all day, only allowing the Raiders to put four shots on goal, all of which Marcia LaPlante saved.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Venezia's goal was her second of the year, tying her total from her sophomore campaign last season.
  • Walsh picked up the second assist of her collegiate career, tying her for second on the team with Koomen.
  • LaPlante's second shutout of the season improves her goals against average to 1.85 and her save percentage to .821.

UP NEXT:

The Crusaders will take on No. 23 Fairfield tomorrow, Oct. 6, at 4:05 p.m. at home in a non-conference matchup.
