The Lead: Senior Marc Buermann tallied three goals and two assists for five points as the Holy Cross men's lacrosse team defeated Bucknell, 10-8, in Patriot League action on Saturday. This was the Crusaders' first ever win against Bucknell as the Bison had won the previous 27 meetings. The Crusaders' 2-1 Patriot League record ties their best start ever as they also began the Patriot League season 2-1 in 2015.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After Bucknell took an early lead with a goal by Connor O'Hara, the Crusaders took a 2-1 advantage with two straight goals. After freshman Kevin Kodzis scored, senior Jack McGovern fired a shot from the Crusaders' defensive zone all the way to the back of the net.
- Will Sands then closed out the first quarter with two consecutive goals to give the Bison a 3-2 advantage.
- The Crusaders responded by netting the first two goals of the second quarter as Buermann and senior Jon Vogel each found the back of the net.
- Sean O'Brien then posted the last goal of the second quarter as the game was tied at 4-4 at the half.
- After the Bison took a 5-4 lead, the Crusaders netted two straight to move out to a 6-5 advantage. Freshman Connor Waldron and Buermann gave the Crusaders the lead.
- But Bucknell tallied three consecutive goals to take a 8-6 lead with 10:47 left in the fourth quarter.
- Junior Logan LeBlond and senior Kevin Lux each scored a goal to tie the contest at 8-8 with 8:29 remaining.
- Buermann found the back of the net to give the Crusaders a 9-8 lead with 7:16 left.
- Then with 5:31 remaining, senior Sean Kirkpatrick increased the lead to 10-8.
- The Crusaders were able to keep the Bison from finding the back of the net again for the 10-8 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Tesoro made nine saves to earn the win, while Christian Klipstein posted 10 for Bucknell.
- Bucknell outshot Holy Cross, 34-32.
- The Bison picked up 30 ground balls and the Crusaders had 24.
- Bucknell won 15 face-offs, while Holy Cross secured six.
- The Crusaders went 0-3 on extra-man opportunities, while the Bison went 0-1.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- This was the first ever win for the Crusaders over Bucknell in program history. The Bison were 27-0 versus the Crusaders entering the contest.
- The Crusaders are 2-1 in the Patriot League for only the second time in program history which ties their best start to a season. Holy Cross was also 2-1 in 2015.
- McGovern's goal was his first of his collegiate career.
- Buermann has scored at least one goal in 13 straight games. He entered the game with the eighth longest streak in the nation.
- The hat trick for Buermann was his second of the season and the fifth of his career.
- His game-winning goal was his first of the season and the fourth of his career.
