The Lead: Junior Jake Sbarbaro captured three first-place finishes for the Crusaders, but the Holy Cross men's swimming and diving team fell to Providence, 156-142, in a dual meet on Saturday.

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sbarbaro took first in the 200-meter freestyle, swimming for a time of 2:00.29. Sbarbaro also placed first in the 200-meter butterfly, recording a time of 2:15.03 and in the 200-meter IM with a time of 2:13.30.
  • Sbarbaro additionally swam with the 400-meter freestyle relay squad who captured first place for Holy Cross with a time of 3:40.44, just missing the season-best time by 0.02 seconds. Senior co-captain Alex Young, as well as sophomores Corey Manley and Steve Tierney made up the rest of this relay team.
  • Holy Cross won both diving events with junior Jimmy Nugent, sophomore Riccardo Marcangeli and junior Nick Chevalier leading the way, respectively. Nugent took first place in both the one-meter dives, recording a score of 2:19.22 in his first dive and 157.87 in his second.
  • Tierney also swam for a first-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly with a time of 59.32. Manley was right behind him in second place for a time of 1:00.91.
  • Tierney took second place in the 100-meter freestyle, finishing with a mark of 55.06.
  • Manley additionally swam well in the 50-meter freestyle, finishing in second place 0.03 seconds behind the first place Providence finisher with a time of 24.63.
  • Senior co-captain Andrew Higgins took second place in both the 100 (1:07.93) and 200 (2:31.88)-meter breaststrokes.
  • In the 100-meter backstroke, junior Ethan Nightingale swam for second place, registering a time of 1:04.17.

 UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 28 when they host Bryant for senior day.
