THE BASICS

• The Lead: Junior forward Maureen Connolly notched the game-winning goal in the 47th minute, as Holy Cross earned a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart on Sunday afternoon at the Hart Turf Field at the Luth Athletic Complex.

ALS AWARENESS GAME

• The Crusaders hosted their ALS Awareness Game against Sacred Heart.
• In total, the team raised $1,280 to donate to the Frates ALS Research & Support Fund.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Sacred Heart got the scoring started early on in the first half, as Kelsy Hopkins found a loose ball in the circle and tapped it in for the 1-0 lead.
• Holy Cross totaled four penalty corners in the first half, but were unable to tie up the game.
• The Crusaders battled back early on in the second half, as senior midfielder Lauren Sutherland scored in the 44th minute of play as she carried the ball into the circle and scored on a low angle shot, making it 1-1.
• Connolly gave Holy Cross the 2-1 lead just minutes later, as she was set up by freshman midfielder Madeline Alderfer at the top of the circle for a go-ahead goal to make it 2-1.
• The Pioneers made a final push, pulling their netminder with 2:14 left in regulation in an attempt to tie the game. Sacred Heart managed to get one final shot on net as time was about to expire, but freshman goalkeeper Marcia LaPlante kept the ball out to help secure the 2-1 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• LaPlante made three saves in net to earn the win for Holy Cross.
• Emily Degennaro stopped five shots for Sacred Heart.
• Shots were 15-4 in favor of Holy Cross.
• Connolly led Holy Cross with four shot attempts, including two on net.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

• Connolly now has seven goals for the season. She is now tied for 10th all-time in program history with 23 career goals.
• Connolly has notched at least one point in her last 10 games.
• Sutherland's goal was her first of the season.
• LaPlante improves to 2-0 on the season following her second career start.

• Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, as it opens Patriot League play against American at the Hart Turf Field at the Luth Athletic Complex with action beginning at 12:05 p.m.
