WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior
Maguire Sturgis netted an unassisted goal three minutes into the extra frame to lift field hockey over Georgetown, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at the Hart Turf Field.
With the win, Holy Cross improves to 4-5, while Georgetown moves to 2-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Georgetown scored the lone goal of the first half 12:04 into the first quarter.
- Sturgis scored her first goal of the game on an attacking penalty corner 5:41 into the third quarter. Junior Marissa MacLean sent the insert to senior Megan Schienbein at the top of the circle, who in turn sent the pass across the circle to Sturgis for the open shot.
- The two teams traded penalty corner opportunities and shots on goal throughout the fourth quarter, though neither team was able to score.
- With just over three minutes elapsed in the extra period, Sturgis stripped the ball off a Georgetown defender, carried it into the circle, and unleashed a reverse chip that found it's way into the back of the net for the game-winning score.
BEYOND THE BOX:
- Sophomore Mia McCloskey recorded seven saves in the contest.
- Holy Cross narrowly out-shot Georgetown, 15-13.
- The Crusaders, who entered the game tenth in the nation with eight penalty corner opportunities a game, finished the contest with seven opportunities.
UP NEXT:
- Holy Cross will return to Patriot League play on Saturday, Oct. 4 when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa. to face Bucknell at 12 p.m.
