The Lead: With the Crusaders trailing 9-6 with 6:56 left in the second half, they rallied to tie the game at 9-9, but with 1:41 remaining Gretchen Richter scored the game-winning goal for the Bison as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell to Bucknell, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon in Patriot League action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After the Bison scored the first four goals of the contest, the Crusaders responded with five straight scores to take a 5-4 lead with 6:27 left in the first half. Sophomore Stephanie Ford (Summit, N.J.) netted two straight goals off passes by senior Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.), while freshman Alexis Leighton (Garden City, N.Y.) scored off a pass from freshman Keely Connors (Bedford, N.Y.). Then junior Maddie Ward (Norwell, Mass.) found the back of the net on a free-position shot, while junior Tess MacKay (Simsbury, Conn.) scored off a pass by Concilio.
  • But Bucknell closed out the first half with three consecutive goals to take a 7-5 advantage.
  • After the Bison scored the first goal of the second half to increase their lead to 8-5, Ward posted her second goal of the contest on a free-position shot. But Bucknell went up by three with a goal with 14:49 remaining.
  • The Crusaders then stormed back scoring three straight goals to tie the contest at 9-9. With 6:56 left, MacKay scored off a pass from senior captain Margie Smith (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), while with 5:12 remaining, Smith found the back of the net on a free-position shot. Then with 2:39 left, Concilio tied the game at 9-9.
  • With 1:41 left, Richter netted the game-winner for the 10-9 final score.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Sophomore goalie Julia Maloney (Loudonville, N.Y.) made five saves, while Jamie DeWitt posted eight saves to earn the victory.
  • Both Holy Cross and Bucknell posted 21 shots.
  • The Bison picked up 17 ground balls and the Crusaders recorded 15.
  • The Crusaders secured 11 draw controls to Bucknell's 10.
  • Holy Cross went 3-6 on free-position shots and the Bison went 1-5.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Ford scored a career-best two goals.
  • With her three assists, Concilio now has 65 for her career which are third all-time in program history.
