Field Hockey Earns Shutout Victory Over Lafayette

  • The Lead: Holy Cross had goals from junior forward Maureen Connolly and freshman midfielder Madeline Alderfer, as the Crusaders defeated Lafayette, 2-0, on Saturday morning in Worcester.

 HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Connolly got the Crusaders on the board early, as she carried the ball into the circle and snuck it past the Lafayette goalkeeper in the eighth minute of play, giving Holy Cross a 1-0 lead.
  • Holy Cross maintained possession for most of the first half, and outshot the Leopards 5-1 in that time.
  • Alderfer made it 2-0 in favor of the Crusaders in the 59th minute. Sophomore forward Suzanne Noone played the ball up the sideline for sophomore forward Caroline Bono, who found Alderfer with a long pass across the circle for the tap-in goal.
  • Lafayette added offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting Holy Cross 7-5, but the Crusaders held the Leopards to just one penalty corner in the final 35 minutes and limited their shots on net to four.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Freshman goalkeeper Marcia LaPlante made five saves in the shutout win.
  • Katelyn Arnold stopped five shots for Lafayette.
  • Shots attempted were 10-8 in favor of Holy Cross.
  • Connolly led the Crusaders with four shots attempted, including three on net.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • This was the Crusaders' first shutout win over a Patriot League opponent since 2007, when they defeated Lafayette, 1-0, on Sept. 29.
  • Connolly's goal was her 10th of the season, and the 26th of her career.
  • Alderfer's goal was her second of the season.
  • LaPlante earned her first career shutout victory, and now stands 5-3 on the year.
