The Lead: Senior captain Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) scored the game winning goal for the Crusaders with just 18 seconds left in the second half as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team defeated Columbia, 9-8, at Holy Cross Field on Wednesday afternoon. Ryan, who entered the game with 87 career caused turnovers, set a new Holy Cross all-time career record with her 88th by posting one today.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Junior Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.) came out and scored the first goal for the Crusaders and was answered back by Caroline Joy for the Lions. The Crusaders made the score 2-1 with a goal by sophomore Avery Giorgio (Madison, Conn.) assisted by Concilio. Victoria Kalamaras had the equalizer with 23:46 left in the first half.
- Katie Angulo then had back-to-back goals leaving the score 4-2, Columbia with 18:37 left in the first half.
- Giorgio scored off a pass from sophomore Tess MacKay (Simsbury, Conn.) and was quickly answered by Sara Ruzzi making the score 5-3, Columbia with 14:48 remaining in the first half.
- The Crusaders then went on a three-goal run. One goal was by Concilio, one by Giorgio with an assist from Concilio, and the last by Ryan from sophomore Mary Patalita (Alexandria, Va.).
- The score was 6-5 Crusaders going into the second half.
- Kalamaras scored the first goal of the half for the Lions then sophomore Maddie Ward (Norwell, Mass.) scored off a free-position shot to put the Crusaders in the lead again with a score of 7-6 with 19:39 left in regulation.
- Joy scored the equalizer for Columbia and Ryan fought back to grab the lead again for the Crusaders with a goal with 2:02 left in the game.
- Joy responded again with the equalizer making the game 8-8, but the Lions couldn't stop Ryan from scoring the game-winning goal with 18 seconds left making the final score 9-8.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Holy Cross outshot Columbia 22-17 and both the Crusaders' junior goalie Katie Boyle (Devon, Pa.) and the Lions' Kelsey Gedin had four saves each.
- The Crusaders went 11-13 on clears while the Lions went 7-11.
- Holy Cross had 19 ground balls to Columbia's 12.
- The Lions went 2-2 on free-position shots while the Crusaders went 1-2.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Ryan now has 88 career caused turnovers, setting the Holy Cross all-time career record for caused turnovers. Susan Roth (2000-2003) previously held the record with 87 career caused turnovers. She is sixth all-time in Patriot League history.
- Ryan's game-winner was her second of the season and the sixth of her career.
- Ryan has scored at least one goal in 21 straight games.
- Ryan had her sixth hat-trick of the season and the 21st of her career.
- Ryan now has 138 career goals which moves her to third all-time in school history.
- Giorgio had her first hat-trick of the season and the second of her career.
- Concilio led the team with four points, with two goals and two assists. She has tallied 10 points over the last two games, with three goals and seven assists.
- Concilio now has 46 career assists which are now tied for fourth all-time in school history.
- The Crusaders are 2-0 all-time against Columbia with the only other meeting being a 7-4 win on March 6, 1997.
