The Lead: Senior captain Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) and sophomore Avery Giorgio (Madison, Conn.) each scored a goal in overtime as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team defeated Patriot League opponent Bucknell, 12-10, at Holy Cross Field on Saturday afternoon. Junior Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.) posted one goal and five assists for six points. Her five assists are tied for the second most in school history as the record is six.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders started the game with four straight goals to take a 4-0 lead with 12:49 left in the first half. Giorgio scored the first goal of the game, followed by sophomore Tess MacKay (Simsbury, Conn.) and Ryan. Concilio post an assist on all three goals. She then netted the fourth goal of the contest.
- But the Bison responded by netting four consecutive goals to tie the game at 4-4 with 5:28 remaining in the first half. Then sophomore Mary Patalita (Alexandria, Va.) found the back of the net to give the Crusaders a 5-4 lead at the half.
- After a goal by MacKay off a pass by Ryan increased the Crusaders' lead to 6-4 with 28:58 left in the second half, Bucknell scored two straight to tie the game at 6-6. But the Crusaders then moved out to an 8-6 advantage with 12:08 left as Ryan and senior captain Lissie Russert (Cincinnati, Ohio) each found the back of the net. Concilio tallied an assist on Ryan's goal.
- After a goal by Ally Furbay cut the lead to 8-7, sophomore Maddie Ward (Norwell, Mass.) scored on a free-position shot to make it a 9-7 contest with 6:24 remaining. But three straight goals by the Bison gave Bucknell its first lead of the game at 10-9 with 1:55 left.
- With the Crusaders trailing 10-9 and Bucknell with the ball, sophomore defender Anna Johnson (Summit, N.J.) stole a pass and then sent the ball to MacKay who fired a shot to the back of the net to tie the game at 10-10 with just 1:16 left in the second half as the game went to overtime.
- Ryan scored the game-winner with 4:51 remaining in overtime off a pass by Concilio. Then Giorgio increased the Crusaders' lead to 12-10 on a free-position goal with 3:01 remaining. The Crusaders were able to keep the Bison off the scoreboard in overtime for the 12-10 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Concilio led the team with six points, while Ryan posted three goals and one assist for four points, and MacKay netted three goals.
- Junior goalie Katie Boyle (Devon, Pa.) made five saves to earn the win, while Elizabeth Duswalt posted 12 saves for the Bison.
- Ryan led the team with five draw controls, while Ryan and MacKay each tallied four ground balls. Junior Jersey Burns (Salem, N.H.) led the Crusaders with three caused turnovers.
- Holy Cross outshot Bucknell, 30-23, while the Crusaders picked up 24 ground balls and the Bison tallied 14.
- Bucknell secured 16 draw controls and Holy Cross posted nine, while the Crusaders went 3-6 on free-position shots and the Bison went 2-6.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Concilio's five assists are the second most in school history. The school record is six set by Erin Rowse in the 18-2 win versus Siena on March 18, 2000, and by Meg O'Leary in the 11-10 double-overtime victory versus Lehigh on April 4, 2009. The last time a Crusader posted five assists was Katie Gardner in the 13-4 win versus Lafayette on April 17, 2010.
- Concilio now has 44 career assists which are fifth all-time in program history.
- Ryan now has 87 career caused turnovers, which are tied for first all-time in school history with Susan Roth (2000-2003). She is tied with Roth for sixth all-time in Patriot League history.
- Ryan now has 193 career draw controls which are already a school record and rank fifth all-time in Patriot League history.
- Ryan has 173 career points which move her to fourth all-time in program history.
- Ryan's game-winner was her first of the season and the fifth of her career. Ryan has scored at least one goal in 20 straight games.
- The hat-trick for Ryan was her fifth of the season and the 20th of her career.
- Johnson's assist was her first collegiate point.
- MacKay tallied her first hat-trick of the season and the second of her career.
- The Crusaders have played in four overtime games this season which are the most in program history. The Crusaders are 2-2 this year in overtime.
