GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After five scoreless frames by both teams, Holy Cross struck for a run in the top of the sixth, as sophomore Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.) scored on a dropped infield fly out to give the Crusaders the 1-0 lead.
  • Army threatened to score in the bottom of the sixth, as it had runners on the corners and zero outs. The Crusaders, however, were able to get out of the jam with three groundouts and stranded the Black Knight runner on third base to preserve the one-run advantage.
  • The Crusaders added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning, as freshman Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) and sophomore Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored on a throwing error by Army to make the score its final, 3-0

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Finan pitched the complete-game shutout in picking up his third win of the season (3-2). He allowed three hits and two walks, while fanning two batters.
  • Army West Point starter Jeremy Mortensen was charged with the loss (2-4), as he surrendered three runs (one earned) on four hits.
  • Holy Cross held the 4-3 edge in total hits, as Schlich led the Crusaders with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.

GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Army looked to score in the bottom of the first inning, as it had the bases loaded with zero outs, but King got out of the jam with three consecutive outs including a punchout to end the frame.
  • Holy Cross broke the stalemate in the top of the eighth inning. Junior Connor Perry (Haverhill, Mass.) drew a leadoff walk and was pinch run for by senior Bobby Pease (Billerica, Mass.) Voitik pushed Pease into scoring position during the next at bat on a sacrifice bunt. Pease then scored on an RBI-single up the middle by junior Bobby Indeglia (North Kingstown, R.I.) to give Holy Cross the 1-0 lead.
  • Crusader junior reliever Sean Gustin (Stoneham, Mass.) only allowed one hit over the final two frames to clinch the victory for the Crusaders.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • King improved his record to 3-0, as he allowed four hits and three walks in 7.0 innings pitched, while striking out four. Gustin notched his fourth save of the season with three punchouts over the final two innings.
  • Army reliever Matt Ball was charged with the loss (3-2), as he allowed one run in two-third of an inning pitched.
  • The Crusaders held the 6-5 advantage in the hitting department.
  • Schlich was the only Holy Cross player with multiple hits in the second game, as he batted 2-for-4.
