Women's Lacrosse Falls To Brown, 11-10

The Lead: With the Bears leading 10-7 with 4:07 remaining in the second half, the Crusaders posted three consecutive goals to tie the game at 10-10, but with just 11 seconds left Marissa Hudgins scored the game-winning goal as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team fell to Brown, 11-10, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Bears started off strong with the first two goals of the game, both by Lauren Toy. Senior captain Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) answered back with a goal and was followed by a goal by junior Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.) with sophomore Maddie Ward's (Norwell, Mass.) assist. The score was 2-2 with 20:41 left in the half.
  • Brown answered back with a goal by Hudgins, assisted by Toy. Junior Kate Martino (Summit, N.J.) then had the equalizer for a score of 3-3 with 11:03 left in the half.
  • After Ryan shot a bouncer free-position to take the lead for the Crusaders, Toy responded tying the score at 4-4 at the half.
  • At the start of the second half, Brown came out strong with three goals in a row making the score 7-4 with 25:14 left in the half. Martino and sophomore Tess MacKay (Simsbury, Conn.) answered back, both with assists by Concilio. After Abby Bunting scored for Brown, Concilio found the back of the net, assisted by Martino to cut the Brown lead to 8-7.
  • The Bears scored two more goals making the score 10-7, but the Crusaders fought back with three consecutive goals, two by sophomore Mary Patalita (Alexandria, Va.) and one by Concilio. Patalita's scored off a free-position, followed by Concilio's goal. Then with 1:57 left, Ryan sent a pass off a free-position to Patalita who found the back of the net to tie the contest at 10-10.
  • Hudgins scored the game-winning goal with 11 seconds left. Brown's Richael Walsh then won the ensuing draw control to secure the 11-10 victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Concilio posted five points for the Crusaders with her three goals and two assists.
  • Junior goalie Katie Boyle (Devon, Pa.) had six saves, while Kellie Roddy tallied seven saves.
  • Each team posted 21 shots, while the Crusaders picked up 24 ground balls and the Bears tallied 18.
  • Brown secured 18 draw controls and Holy Cross posted four.
  • The Crusaders went 2-4 on free-position shots, while the Bears went 1-4.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Ryan and Concilio each now have 33 career assists. They are both tied for 10th all-time in school history.
  • Concilio had her second straight hat-trick, which is also the second of her career.
