Women's Lacrosse Defeats Colgate In Triple Overtime Thriller, 12-11

The Lead: Junior Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored the game-winning goal for the Crusaders in triple overtime as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team defeated Colgate 12-11 on the road on Saturday afternoon to begin Patriot League action. The Crusaders and the Raiders were tied 10-10 after regulation.  Each team scored one goal apiece in the first overtime, but needed two more extra periods to decide the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Senior Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) opened the scoring early in the first half for Holy Cross giving the Crusaders the 1-0 lead. Emily Peebles quickly responded for Colgate tying the game at 1-1. Concilio regained the lead for Holy Cross finding the back of the net off an assist from sophomore Tess MacKay (Simsbury, Conn.).
  • Colgate scored the next three goals bringing the score to 4-2 Raiders. Haley O'Hanlon had two of the goals and Sarah Bowles had one goal while on the man-up opportunity.
  • The Crusaders responded with goals by Concilio and Ryan to even the score at 4-4. Ryan's goal came on a man-up opportunity.
  • Megan Ark found the back of the net for Colgate making the score 5-4 Raiders. Ryan evened the score once again for Holy Cross with her third goal of the game. Kallan Murray scored for the Raiders to give them the one goal advantage but junior Kate Martino (Summit, N.J.) beat Raiders goalie Jennie Berglin off an assist from Ryan to tie the game at six to finish the first half.
  • Senior Lissie Russert (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Ryan each scored to begin the second half giving Holy Cross the 8-6 advantage. Peebles brought Colgate within one to make the score 8-7 Crusaders. Murray had the assist on the goal.
  • Russert scored her second goal of the game to bring the Crusader lead back to two goals. Colgate then responded with three goals of its own to take the lead 10-9. Peebles, Mallorie O'Brien and O'Hanlon all scored for the Raiders.
  • With 2:49 to play in regulation, junior Margie Smith (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored the equalizer for the Crusaders making the score 10-10.
  • In the first overtime O'Hanlon put Colgate on the board first but Martino added her second goal of the game to tie the score at 11-11.
  • Neither team was able to score in the second overtime.
  • In the third overtime Concilio was able to net home the game winner off an assist by Ryan as the Crusaders defeated the Raiders 12-11.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Holy Cross outshot Colgate 22-19.
  • Berglin made five saves for Colgate while Junior Katie Boyle (Devon, Pa.) made three for Holy Cross.
  • Holy Cross won 16 draw controls compared to Colgate's 13.
  • The Crusaders held the edge in ground balls by a margin of 13-12.
  • Both teams went 3-5 on free position shots.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Ryan's four goals this afternoon move her into a tie for eighth place for all-time career goals in Holy Cross history scored with 118. Ryan also sits in eighth place for all-time career points with 150. With 75 career caused turnovers Ryan is ranked second in Holy Cross history.
  • Ryan is ranked second all-time in career draw controls with 168. Patricia Sutton (2004-2007) is first in all-time career draw controls with 171.
  • Concilio's game-winning-goal was the second of her career. This was also Concilio's first career hat-trick.
  • Boyle earned her first collegiate victory with the win today.

UP NEXT:

  • The Crusaders are back in action on Tuesday, March 10 when they travel to Providence, R.I. to take on Brown for a 4:00 p.m. start.
