The Lead: Junior Kate Martino (Summit, N.J.) scored a career-best six goals as the Holy Cross women's lacrosse team defeated American, 15-10, in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Crusaders start the Patriot League season with a 2-0 record. Senior captain Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.), who entered the game with 168 career draw controls, posted six giving her a school-record 174 for her career. The previous record was 171 by Patricia Sutton (2004-2007).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After the Eagles took an early 1-0 lead with a goal by Sarah Bootman with 22:02 left in the first half, the Crusaders tied the game at 1-1 just 28 seconds later when sophomore Maddie Ward (Norwell, Mass.) found the back of the net off a pass from junior Kaitlin Concilio (Ridgewood, N.J.).
- American then took a 2-1 advantage with a goal by Leah Brennan, but Ryan tied the game at 2-2 with 19:19 remaining in the first half.
- After a goal by Jessica Wojciechowski gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead, the Crusaders then scored four consecutive goals to move out to a 6-3 advantage with 9:39 left in the first half. Martino netted three straight goals and Concilio also found the back of the net and posted an assist on the third goal by Martino.
- Wojciechowski ended Holy Cross' scoring streak, but Martino's fourth goal of the game gave the Crusaders a 7-4 lead at the half.
- Sophomore Avery Giorgio (Madison, Conn.) scored the first goal of the second half, but Olivia Mangan found the back of the net for the Eagles to cut the Crusader lead to 8-5 with 26:25 left. The Crusaders then answered with four consecutive goals for a 12-5 lead with 14:54 remaining. Martino netted two goals, while sophomore Tess MacKay (Simsbury, Conn.) scored off a pass from Concilio and junior Margie Smith (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) also found the back of the net.
- American then tallied four straight goals to cut the Holy Cross lead to 12-9 with 5:35 left in the second half. But a goal by Concilio off a pass by Ryan and a goal by junior MacKenzie Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md.) increased the lead to 14-9.
- After Terese Buechli scored for the Eagles, MacKay scored the last goal of the game off a pass by Ryan for the 15-10 final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Martino led the Crusaders with six goals, while Concilio posted two goals and a team-best three assists for five points. Ryan led the team with six draw controls, while junior Jersey Burns (Salem, N.H.) tallied a team-best three ground balls.
- Junior goalie Katie Boyle (Devon, Pa.) made five saves to earn the victory, while Rose Redfoot also tallied five saves.
- The Crusaders outshot the Eagles, 23-22, while each team picked up 15 ground balls.
- Holy Cross secured 16 draw controls and American posted 11.
- The Crusaders went 5-6 on free-position shots, while the Eagles went 1-6.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Ryan now holds the school record for career draw controls with 174. Patricia Sutton set the previous record with 171 (2004-2007). Her 174 draw controls are fifth all-time in Patriot League history. Ryan now has 121 goals, 35 assists and 156 points for her collegiate career. She is sixth all-time in school history in points and seventh in goals, while she is tied for ninth in assists. Ryan also has 76 caused turnovers which are second all-time in program history.
- Martino's six goals are the most by a Crusader in a game since Sara Hennessey scored seven and Ryan netted six in the 20-5 victory versus Bucknell on April 7, 2012. Martino now has five career hat-tricks.
- Concilio has 36 career assists which are eighth all-time in school history.
- Senior Sophia Agostinelli (Framingham, Mass.) has 50 career caused turnovers which are seventh all-time in program history.
- MacKay now has two career game-winning goals.
