Field Hockey Falls To American, 3-0, In Season Finale

  • The Lead: American's Jess Davis tallied the game-winning goal to help lead the visiting Eagles to a 3-0 victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League field hockey action on Saturday morning at the Hart Turf Field. With the win, American improves to 9-8 on the season and 4-2 in the league, while the Crusaders conclude the 2014 season with a 3-16 overall record and a 0-6 mark in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After a scoreless first half in which American outshot Holy Cross 9-0, the Eagles tallied the first goal of the contest in the 38th minute (37:26). Davis received a pass from Natalie Marsh in the middle of the circle and lofted a high shot inside the left post to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead.
  • In the 45th minute (44:08), American made the score 2-0, as Sophia Crawshay dribbled down the right side and slipped a shot by Holy Cross senior goalkeeper Kat Matchett (Maple Glen, Pa.).
  • The Crusaders had a chance to score in the 57th minute, as junior Haley Makuch (Granby, Conn.) launched a shot off a penalty corner, but it was blocked by an Eagle defender before it could make it to the net.
  • The Eagles made the score its final, 3-0, in the 70th minute (69:38). Off a penalty corner, Grace Wilson fired a low shot that was redirected by Rebecca Treharne high into the back of the cage.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Matchett made nine saves for the Crusaders, while American goalkeeper Kate McBeath was not called upon to make a stop.
  • The Eagles held the advantages in total shots (16-1), shots on goal (12-0) and penalty corners (6-1).

SENIOR DAY:

  • Prior to the contest, Matchett and fellow seniors Molly Feit (Acton, Mass.) and Colby Lohrey (West Simsbury, Conn.) were honored on "Senior Day" for their commitment to the field hockey program over the past four seasons. Click on the video below to view the ceremony.
