WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Abby Desmarais has been named Patriot League Women's Outdoor Rookie of the Week for competition between Apr. 7 – 13.
Desmarais picked up four wins over the weekend. At the Friar Invitational hosted by Providence on Apr. 11, she won the 200m dash with a time of 25.37. At the Julie LaFreniere Commonwealth Invitational hosted by UMass Amherst on Apr. 13, she helped the 4x100m relay (47.15) and 4x400m relay teams (3:48.99) to victory. The freshman also set a new personal best in the 100m dash with a time of 11.94 to win, which ranks her fourth overall in the Patriot League and the best of any first-year athlete in the event. The 4x100m relay time ranks third and the 4x400m relay team ranks second in the Patriot League.
Junior captain Liam Lyons and senior captain Haley Murphy were both listed as honorable mentions for their performances over the weekend. Lyons broke his own mile school record with a time of 3:59.75 at the Friar Invitational which converts to a 3:41.99 1500m time, ranking him 21st in the East and fourth in the Patriot League. Murphy broke her own 400m hurdles school record with a time of 56.60 at the Friar Invitational, ranking her 40th in the East and first in the Patriot League. Murphy also took second in the 400m (55.60) and ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x400m relay (3:48.99) with Desmarais at the Julie LaFreniere Commonwealth Invitational, which ranks second in the Patriot League.
The Holy Cross track and field teams will return to action to host the inaugural Jim Kavanagh Legacy Invitational in Worcester, Mass. on Apr. 19 at the Hart Turf Field & Hart Track.
