ORLANDO, Fla.— The Holy Cross track and field teams had a great start in the outdoor season opener at the Black and Gold Invitational hosted by the University of Central Florida (UCF) from Friday, Mar. 21 to Saturday, Mar. 22. Junior captain Liam Lyons broke two school records and senior captain Haley Murphy broke one school record to open the outdoor season.
MEN'S MEET HIGHLIGHTS:
- Lyons broke the 1500m school record with a time of 3:43.98 to take fourth in the event on day one. He previously set the record (3:45.46) running unattached at The Elliott Denman NJ International Track and Field Meet on June 1, 2024. He broke a 47-year-old 800m school record with a time of 1:49.55 to place sixth in the event on day two. The previous record (1:49.60) was set by Michael Mahoney on April. 29, 1977. Sophomore Joseph Mahon also competed in the 800m (1:50.15, eighth).
- Senior captain William Schimitsch placed fifth in the 5000m with a time of 14:57.93.
- Sophomore Chandler Dicks finished eighth in the long jump with a mark of 7.08m.
WOMEN'S MEET HIGHLIGHTS:
- Murphy broke the 400m hurdles school record with a time of 1:00.45 to finish seventh in the event. The previous record (1:00.81) was set by Lauren Rasmus '19 on May. 4, 2019, at the Patriot League Outdoor Championship.
- Senior captain Abby Hughes finished eighth in the 1500m with a time of 4:30.36.

- The Holy Cross track and field teams will return to New England for the Black and Gold Invitational hosted by Bryant in Smithfield, R.I. from Mar. 28 to 29.
