Lyons, Mahon, Miller set program records to highlight indoor season openers for men's track & field

BOSTON, Mass./Providence, R.I. – Senior Liam Lyons along with juniors Joseph Mahon and Tristan Miller all set program records to highlight the day for the Holy Cross men's track & field team in the indoor season opening meets on Saturday.

The Crusaders had athletes compete at both the Alden Invitational hosted by Brown and the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener hosted by Boston University.

SHARON COLYEAR-DANVILLE SEASON OPENER HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Lyons broke a 56-year-old program record in the 3,000 meters as he clocked a time of 7:59.42 for a 24th place finish, nearly eight seconds ahead of the previous record of 8:07 that had been set by Art Dulong in March of 1969.
  • Miller set a new program record in the 300 meters as he finished eighth in 34.69 seconds.
  • Mahon finished the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:04.52, more than 31 seconds ahead of the previous school record of 14:35.70 that had been set by Brad Mish on Feb. 27, 2009. 
  • Sophomore Brendan Rogers followed Miller in 12th place in the 300 meters with a personal-best time of 35.11 seconds and classmate Josh Gentchos took 14th with a personal PR of 35.22.
  • Gentchos added an eighth-place finish in the 60 meter dash (8.13).
ALDEN INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The Crusaders finished third in the team standings with 84 points behind victories from sophomore Jack Larkin in the mile and junior Matthew Perkins in the 60 meter hurdles.
  • Larkin won the mile in a personal-best time of 4:22.16, surpassing his previous-best of 4:29.12 that had been set at the URI Invitational on Jan. 18, 2025.
  • Perkins won the 60 meter hurdles in 8.51 seconds and led a pair of teammates in sophomore LJ Hines (3rd, 8.91) and senior Luke Wadzinski (4th, 8.96).
  • Holy Cross took four of the top five spots in the mile as junior Thomas Speltz (3rd, 4:28.39), sophomore Joey Ryan (4th, 4:29.72) and junior Quinn Salmon (5th, 4:30.03) followed Larkin.
  • Salmon's time also marked a personal record as he eclipsed the previous best mile time of 4:32.51 set at the URI Coaches' Invitational on Feb. 8, 2025.
  • Freshman Jack Marchese notched a fifth place finish in the 1,000 meters in his collegiate debut with a time of 2:34.50.
  • In the field events, junior Michael Laflamme finished second in the weight throw (16.01m) and fellow junior Logan Mott took second in the triple jump (13.54m).
  • Mott edged out sophomore teammate Tireni Asenuga who finished third in the triple jump at 13.50m and added a fifth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.61m.
  • Freshman Nic Oglesby placed third in the high jump (1.90m), while classmate Jake Baker took third in the shot put (14.04m) and fifth in the weight throw (14.54m).
UP NEXT:
  • The Crusaders will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17 for the URI Invitational that will get underway at 11 a.m.
