ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Both men's and women's cross country took first at the Wheaton & Babson Season Opener. The men competed against eight other teams while the women took on seven other schools at Highland Park on Saturday, Aug. 31.
Sophomore Joseph Mahon finished first overall crossing the finish at 15:49.68 on the five-kilometer course. The Crusaders finished with a total of 32 points to capture the team title. Stonehill followed with 85 points and Brandeis took third with 94 points.
Freshman Joey Ryan earned a second-place finish with a time of 15:54.84, while junior Liam Lyons came in sixth with a time of 16:08.40. Senior William Schimitsch followed Lyons in seventh place (16:08.87), and sophomore Quinn Salmon was 16th (16:28.10) to round out the Holy Cross top five runners.
Senior Abby Hughes was Holy Cross's top finisher claiming second place overall with a time of 11:23.12 on the three-kilometer course. The Crusaders finished with a total of 32 points to capture the team title. Suffolk followed with 57 points and Brandeis took third with 82 points.
Senior Caroline Gage earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 11:41.04, while freshman Shannon Kelly came in seventh at 11:48.24. Freshmen Anna Stolarick (10th, 12:00.68) and Chloe Dibb (14th, 12:03.31) round out the Holy Cross top five runners.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Sept. 7, when they take part in the Shawn M. Nassaney Invitational in Smithfield, R.I.
