Women’s basketball to battle American on Wednesday

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women's basketball team puts their four game winning streak on the line when they host American on Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. Patriot League showdown at the Hart Center Arena. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT HOLY CROSS (12-6, 6-1 PL): 
  • The Crusaders won an overtime thriller on Saturday at Bucknell defeating the Bison 63-62, their first win in Lewisburg since 2015. Senior Avery LaBarbera carried Holy Cross to victory with a career-high matching 30 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Cara McCormack added 13 points while the Crusaders had their best three-point shooting efficiency of the campaign (8-for-15, 53.3%).
  • Holy Cross earned the no. 25 spot in the most recent collegeinsiders.com women's mid-major top-25 rankings announced Tuesday evening. The Crusaders received 62 points narrowly edging out Drake (60 points) for the last spot.
  • Avery LaBarbera was named the GEICO Patriot League Player of the Week for the second time this season the conference offices announced Monday afternoon. LaBarbera averaged 18.7 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game leading the Crusaders to a 3-0 record last week.
  • LaBarbera is currently tied for 10th in the NCAA in double-doubles (11), tied for 10th in defensive rebounds per game (8.2), and ranks 15th in free throw percentage (90.6%).
SCOUTING THE EAGLES (11-5, 4-2 PL): 
  • American, winners of five of their last seven come to Worcester following a 53-49 win at home versus Loyola (Md.) on Saturday. The Eagles used a balanced scoring attack with six players scoring six or more points including Emily Johns who came off the bench to drop 12 points in 19 minutes.
  • American's Jade Edwards was selected as the 2021-22 Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year. Edwards paces the program in points (13.7), rebounds (6.1), and assists (3.4) per game. Her 2.1 steals per game mark is second in the league.
LAST TIME THEY MET: 
  • Holy Cross holds a 24-20 advantage in the series between the two programs which began back in 2000.
  • In their last meeting this season a few weeks ago, American earned a 52-39 win. The Eagles held the Crusaders to their lowest scoring output, field goal percentage (28.6%), and three-point percentage (5.3%) of the season.
