Women's basketball set for Patriot League quarterfinal at Lehigh

The fifth-seeded Holy Cross women's basketball team will open the Patriot League Tournament with a quarterfinal matchup at No. 4 Lehigh on Sunday, March 7. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa.

The game will be broadcasted live on ESPN+.

Holy Cross (7-7, 7-7 Patriot League) at a Glance:
  • The Crusaders ended the regular season on a high note with a 60-52 victory at Boston University on Feb. 21.
  • Junior guard Avery LaBarbera had a dominant performance, scoring a season-high 26 points – including 19 second-half points – and also recording seven rebounds and four steals. LaBarbera's 26 points marked the second-highest scoring total in her career. Her career high for single-game scoring is 30, which she recorded as a freshman against Brown.
  • The Holy Cross win snapped a five-game winning streak for BU and a 10-game winning stretch at Case Gym, a streak dating back to the 2019-20 season. This also marked the first time in 23 games that BU has not held an opponent under 60 points.
  • LaBarbera has reached double figures in 11 of her 14 games this season; she has averaged 18.8 points per game over the last four games.
  • With 14 regular-season games, Holy Cross matched Army for the most conference games played by a Patriot League team this season.
  • Freshman guard Bronagh Power-Cassidy was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year on Wednesday. She is the third Crusader in five years to be named the league's Rookie of the Year, joining LaBarbera (2018-19) and 2020 graduate Lauren Manis (2016-17).
  • LaBarbera earned an All-Patriot League nod for the third straight year while also earning a spot on the All-Defensive Team for the first time in her career.
  • Freshman guard Cara McCormack joined Power-Cassidy on the All-Rookie Team.
Lehigh (7-5, 7-5 Patriot League) at a Glance:
  • Lehigh won its most recent contest on Feb. 22, defeating Lafayette by a score of 71-57.
  • Four Mountain Hawks reached double figures in the contest, led by Emma Grothaus (17 points) and Mackenzie Kramer (16 points).
  • Lehigh earned a pair of All-Patriot League second team selections in Frannie Hottinger and Mary Clougherty. This season, Hottinger has led the Mountain Hawks with an average of 14.0 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game, while Clougherty has averaged 12.8 points per contest.
  • The Mountain Hawks boast the Patriot League's best offense, averaging 73.4 points per game, while also converting on 81.5 percent of their free throws, the second-best mark in the conference. Lehigh also owns the second-best 3-point percentage in the league at 34.4 percent.
  • Lehigh averages a league-best 16.8 assists per game, led by Clair Steele, who averages 4.1 assists per contest.
Last Time They Met:
  • Holy Cross fell in a pair of games at Lehigh on Jan. 23 and 24, dropping the opener by a score of 87-68 before falling 83-62 in the weekend finale.
  • Despite the losses, multiple Crusaders stepped up and had impressive showings. In the opener, sophomore Kerry Flaherty made all five of her field goal attempts to score a career-high 12 points; in the second game, sophomore Addisyn Cross posted a career-high, also with 12 points.
Postseason History:
  • During the 2019-20 Patriot League Tournament, Holy Cross cruised to a quarterfinal win over Lafayette, posting a 52-33 victory.
  • The Patriot League Tournament was canceled prior to the Crusaders' scheduled semifinal matchup at Bucknell on March 12 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • This is the first time Holy Cross and Lehigh have met in the Patriot League Tournament since 2016, when the fifth-seeded Crusaders fell in a quarterfinal matchup to No. 4 Lehigh by a score of 64-48.
  • Holy Cross owns a 47-18 all-time record in the Patriot League Tournament, and has won its quarterfinal matchup each of the last two years.
  • The Crusaders have won 11 Patriot League Championships and appeared in 18 championship games – both the most of any Patriot League team.
