Women's basketball prepares for weekend series vs. Army West Point

The Holy Cross women's basketball team will play a weekend series against Army West Point on Saturday, Jan. 9 and Sunday, Jan. 10.

Saturday's game is set for 3 p.m. in West Point, New York, while Sunday's contest will tip off at 3 p.m. in Worcester.

Both games will be broadcasted live on ESPN+.

Magarity Family:
  • This weekend's matchup will feature Holy Cross head coach Maureen Magarity, and her father, Dave, who is the head coach at Army West Point. This weekend's games are believed to be the first coaching matchup of a father and daughter in Division I history.
  • Maureen Magarity was previously the head coach at New Hampshire from 2010 to 2020; though the Magaritys' teams faced each other in preseason scrimmages, New Hampshire and Army never played a regular season game against each other in that span.
  • Maureen was a member of Dave's staff at Army West Point from 2006-10; she was an assistant coach from 2006-09 and served as associate head coach in 2009-10.
Holy Cross (0-2, 0-2 Patriot League) at a Glance:
  • The Crusaders come off a pair of season-opening losses to Boston University on Monday, Jan. 4 and Tuesday, Jan. 5.
  • In the opener in Boston, Holy Cross fell by a score of 76-54. Junior guard Avery LaBarbera had 15 points, four assists and four steals; freshman guard Cara McCormack had 11 points in her collegiate debut.
  • On Tuesday in Worcester, BU came away with a 72-56 victory. McCormack scored 18 points – all in the second half – with four 3-pointers. Junior forward Oluchi Ezemma pulled down 10 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, while also scoring six points.
  • McCormack is the first Holy Cross rookie to post back-to-back games in double figures to open her career since Lauren Manis in 2016.
  • Ezemma currently leads the Crusaders with an average of 6.5 rebounds per contest. She also leads the Patriot League with eight offensive rebounds through two games.
Army West Point (4-3, 1-1 Patriot League) at a Glance:  
  • Army split a series against Colgate to open Patriot League action; after an 87-76 loss on Saturday, Jan. 2, the Black Knights rebounded with a 72-53 victory on Sunday, Jan. 3.
  • Lauren Lithgow was named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Week following a weekend in which she averaged 17.5 points per game.
  • In all games this season, Alisa Fallon leads Army with an average of 15.7 points per game, along with 8.3 boards per game. Kate Murray is averaging a double-double of 15.4 points and 10.2 rebounds a game.
  • Army was selected to finish eighth in the Patriot League preseason poll, as voted on by the league's coaches and sports information directors.
Last Season:
  • During the 2019-20 regular season, Holy Cross and Army split the season series, with each team winning at home.
  • The Crusaders fell on Jan. 15, 2020 to the Black Knights by a score of 61-48. LaBarbera scored 11 points and recorded five assists in the loss. Fallon led Army with 21 points, 11 rebounds and four steals.
  • Holy Cross earned the victory in Worcester, posting a 64-61 win at the Hart Center. LaBarbera had an impressive showing, chipping in 20 points, seven rebounds and seven assists; Fallon paced Army with 20 points and five assists.
  • Holy Cross owns a 34-31 edge in the all-time series.
