Baseball can't contain UC Riverside in series finale

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Holy Cross baseball team fell in its series finale to UC Riverside, 20-10, in eight innings on Sunday, March 8.

STATS LEADERS: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Freshman designated hitter Andrew McKenna led off the second inning with a single and was brought home on a single from freshman second baseman Max Power to give Holy Cross (5-9) an early 1-0 lead.
  • UC Riverside (9-7) used a four-run third to build a lead over the Crusaders. An RBI single evened the score, and an RBI single to left field followed by a two-run double to center tacked on three more runs.
  • Senior right fielder Riley Livingston walked with one out in the fifth, and a double from freshman third baseman Ben Dellacono scored Livingston to get a run back for Holy Cross. Junior shortstop Cam Meyer was hit by a pitch and senior center fielder Austin Masel walked to load the bases.
  • After an illegal pitch, Dellacono scored to bring the Crusaders within 4-3; junior first baseman Andrew Selima cranked a home run over the right-field wall, giving Holy Cross the lead back at 6-4.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Cole Pofek had an inside-the-park home run to drive in three runs for UC Riverside and take back the lead at 7-6. The Highlanders added on three more runs in the inning to extend their lead to 10-6.
  • Holy Cross cut within 10-8 in the seventh after freshman left fielder Jordan Petrushka hit an RBI double and Selima scored on a wild pitch, but the Highlanders immediately responded with nine runs in the bottom of the frame to put the game of reach.
  • Selima had a two-run single in the top of the eighth, and the Highlanders had a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth before the game was called due to Holy Cross' travel constraints.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Selima's five RBI were the most by a Crusader since Cam O'Neill drove in five runs against Bucknell on April 23, 2017.
UP NEXT:
  • The Crusaders return to New England and will face Boston College on Tuesday, March 10.
  • First pitch in Brighton, Mass. is scheduled for 5 p.m.
