Baseball falls short at Boston College

BRIGHTON, Mass. – A late rally fell short for the Holy Cross baseball team against Boston College in a 10-7 result on Tuesday, March 10.

STATS LEADERS: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior shortstop Cam Meyer reached on a two-out wild pitch in the first; after junior first baseman Andrew Selima was hit by a pitch, freshman catcher Andrew McKenna drove in Meyer with a single to center field, giving Holy Cross (5-10) a 1-0 lead.
  • The Eagles (6-9) evened up the score in the bottom of the first inning after a two-out single; BC had a bases-loaded opportunity, but senior Alex Volpi made a great throw from third base to end the frame.
  • The Eagles added four runs in the bottom of the second, aided by a two-run triple from Joe Suozzi, to take a 5-1 lead.
  • Senior center fielder Austin Masel led off the fourth inning with a single, and Selima drove him home with a one-out double that went over the head of BC right fielder Sal Frelick. McKenna followed with a ground-rule double to right field, scoring Selima and making it a 5-3 game.
  • In the sixth, the Crusaders loaded the bases after freshman right fielder Ben Dellacono reached on a muffed throw, Selima hit a two-out single and McKenna was hit by a pitch. Sophomore left fielder Nate Wolf drove in a pair of runs with a single to center, tying the score at 5-5.
  • A bases-loaded walk, followed by a double down the left field line, gave the Eagles an 8-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth. A double and a sac fly gave the Eagles a 10-5 lead over the next two frames.
  • The Crusaders loaded up the bases in the top of the ninth after McKenna was hit by another pitch, freshman designated hitter Jordan Petrushka singled and freshman second baseman Max Power walked. Senior Riley Livingston had a pinch-hit single to score one run, and Masel added another single to bring Holy Cross within 10-7. However, the threat ended after the Eagles forced a pop fly and a strikeout.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • McKenna's double was his first collegiate extra-base hit. He has recorded at least one hit in four consecutive games.
  • Masel now has seven multi-hit games this season, more than any other Crusader.
UP NEXT:
  • Holy Cross will face Northeastern and Brown in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 14.
  • First pitch against the Huskies is set for 11 a.m.
