Baseball comes up short against UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Holy Cross baseball team fell to UC Riverside by a score of 7-3 on Saturday, March 7.

STATS LEADERS: HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior third baseman Cam Meyer hit a home run to left field with two outs in the first inning, giving the Crusaders (5-8) an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Highlanders (8-7) added two runs in the second off an RBI single and a sac fly to take a 2-1 lead. That lead grew to 6-1 after UC Riverside scored four unearned runs in the third inning.
  • A sac bunt in the fifth inning tacked on another run for the Highlanders.
  • The Crusaders got on the board again in the seventh; junior first baseman Andrew Selima hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He later scored after freshman second baseman Max Power reached on an error.
  • Freshman left fielder Jordan Petrushka singled and advanced to second on an error, and Meyer singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out in the eighth. The Highlanders forced a double play, but it enough to bring Petrushka across and help the Crusaders cut within 7-3.
  • Holy Cross could not cut into any more of the deficit, with UC Riverside pitcher Riley Ohl keeping the Crusaders off the basepaths in the ninth.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Meyer's home run was his second of the season.
