WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team defeated Lehigh, 4-2, Saturday afternoon at Hart Turf Field. The Crusaders improve to 4-4 and 1-1 in Patriot League play as the Mountain Hawks fall to 5-2 and 1-1.
Minke Koomen recorded four points from a goal and two assists to lead the Crusaders. Sinead Walsh, Megan Mulherin, and Philomena Fitzgerald all also scored for Holy Cross, while Madeline Alderfer and Kerri Bolivar picked up assists. Marcia LaPlante made eight saves in goal.
The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead into halftime when Walsh recorded her first collegiate goal in the 29th minute and Koomen followed it up with one of her own just 30 seconds later. The Mountain Hawks would tie things up in the fourth quarter with two straight.
But Holy Cross would again strike in quick succession when Mulherin redirected one home from Bolivar and Fitzgerald took a high shot from Koomen and knocked it down into the cage. Lehigh was not able to recover and the Crusaders earned their first conference win of the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Koomen's four points today give her six on the week as she scored the game-winner in Holy Cross' 2-1 double overtime win over Bryant.
- Both Walsh and Mulherin's goals were collegiate firsts, while Bolivar's assist was her first-ever point.
- The Crusaders have already exceeded their win total from last season (3) and aren't even halfway through 2019.
