WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross women's soccer team tied Army, 1-1, Sunday afternoon on Senior Day, earning an always-important point in league standings. It was each side's first conference game of the year, with the Crusaders moving to 2-2-4 overall and the Black Knights to 3-3-3, as they both start the season 0-0-1 in Patriot League play.
Senior Cassie Cheeseman scored her first collegiate goal in the 36th minute to give the Crusaders the lead. A bouncing ball off a corner found the feet of Cheeseman who was able to squeeze it in between a defender and the Black Knight's goalie into the bottom right corner.
Army would equalize in the 51st minute when Alyssa Carfagno struck one from just inside the 18-yard box that Sophia Lettieri was able to get a hand on, but was hit with too much pace and still found its way in.
The Crusaders would outshoot the Black Knights in overtime, 3-2, but couldn't get a second to go. Their best chance came in the 98th minute when Jenna Barnes found herself one-on-one with Army's net minder. Her shot beat the goalie, but not the crossbar as it deflected back into the 18 and eventually out of danger.
