WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross field hockey team defeated Vermont, 2-1, in a non-conference matchup Sunday evening at Hart Turf Field. The Crusaders improve to 6-6, as the Catamounts fall to 5-7.
Minke Koomen continued her strong season adding another goal and an assist to bring her team-leading point total to 17. Keely Smith scored her second goal of the season and Sinead Walsh picked up her third assist. Marcia LaPlante came up with six saves in goal.
Koomen and Walsh connected in the second quarter on a partial breakaway when Walsh drove hard into the circle and got a pass off to Koomen who beat the Catamount goalie to her left. Vermont would tie things up in the third that's to a Bailey Matthews goal off the feed from Kate Hall.
The Crusaders would take the lead for good in just the second minute of the fourth quarter. Olivia Venezia would take a shot that got blocked by the defense, but Koomen was there to push it over to Smith who was able to lift it over the sprawled out Catamount goalie.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Vermont outshot Holy Cross, 16-7, and out earned them in corners, 8-2, but it didn't matter as the Crusaders made the most out of their opportunities.
- Holy Cross has now doubled its win total from last season with five games remaining.

The Crusaders will play a pair of road games next week, first at Brown on Wednesday, Oct. 16, followed by a matchup with UMass Lowell on Sunday, Oct. 20.
