ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Holy Cross baseball team (18-26) earned a 4-2 victory over Navy (37-14) before falling 4-0 in extra innings in game two to the Midshipmen. The split forces a deciding game three in the Patriot League Semifinals, which will be played in Annapolis, Md. at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow, May 13.

GAME ONE

Four Crusaders crossed the plate in game one, as Holy Cross earned a 4-2 victory in the first game of the doubleheader. Senior Cam O'Neill batted 2-for-3 with a run scored, while sophomore Alex GIonis also registered a pair of hits. Senior Thomas Russo, sophomore Chris Rinaldi and freshman Cam Meyer each scored a run in the win. Sophomores Alex Volpi, Austin Masel and Rinaldi each posted an RBI. Stephen Born and Alex Smith each notched a pair of hits for the Midshipmen. Jacob Williamson and Evan Lowery both crossed the plate for Navy in game one.

Junior Declan Cronin picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings of action. Classmate Danny Barlok pitched four scoreless innings of relief for Holy Cross. Noah Song took the loss for the Midshipmen, allowing four runs on four hits in six innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Rinaldi got the Crusaders on the board first in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run over the left field wall, making it 1-0.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Michael Coritz hit an RBI single to bring home Lowery.
  • Holy Cross regained the lead in the sixth, as O'Neill scored off an RBI single from Volpi and Russo crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
  • In the bottom of the inning, the Midshipmen added another run as Williamson scored when Logan Knowles reached on a fielder's choice to make it a 3-2 game.
  • Masel extended the Crusaders' lead in the seventh, hitting an RBI single to center field to bring home Meyer.
  • Navy loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but freshman David Kale made a diving catch in short left field to end the game and secure the win.

GAME TWO

Junior Pat McGowan and the Crusaders' defense held Navy scoreless for nine innings, but ultimately fell to the Mishipmen 4-0 in 10 innings of play in game two. Meyer, Russo and sophomore Jared Enders each registered two hits each in the loss. Born hit 2-for-5 for the Midshipmen, adding three RBIs and scoring a run. Knowles, Coritz and Zach Biggers also crossed the plate for Navy.

McGowan was credited with the loss by allowing four runs in the 10th inning after pitching nine scoreless. Jared Leins picked up the win for the Midshipmen, closing out the game with 1.2 scoreless innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Navy threatened in the third inning, posting three hits and loading the bases, but Holy Cross ended the half-inning with a double play to keep it a scoreless tie.
  • The Crusaders loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, but Gionis flew out to center field to end the inning.
  • Holy Cross had an opportunity to end the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but Rinaldi popped out to second base to send the game into extra innings.
  • Navy pulled ahead with four runs in the top of the 10th to help secure their win, as Born hit a bases-clearing triple to center field to drive in three before scoring himself off an error.

  • The split doubleheader forces a game three in the semifinal series between Holy Cross and Navy tomorrow, May 13, at 1:00 p.m. in Annapolis, Md.
