WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Holy Cross baseball team (15-19, 9-9) took a pair of single-run losses to Army West Point (25-18, 14-5) on Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE

The Crusaders outhit the Black Knights 7-3, but took a 3-2 loss in the first game of the doubleheader. Sophomore Austin Masel and senior Thomas Russo each crossed the plate for Holy Cross, while sophomore Riley Livingston led the team with two hits. Three different players scored runs for Army West Point. Jacob Hurtubise earned a run scored and an RBI.

Junior Pat McGowan was credited with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits while throwing three strikeouts. Tyler Giovinco earned the win for the Black Knights, allowing two runs (none earned) on seven hits and tossing eight strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Crusaders got off to a quick start offensively, taking a 1-0 lead in the first as Masel scored off a fielding error.
  • Army West Point tied the game up in the bottom of the first, as Anthony Giachini notched an RBI single to score Hurtubise from third.
  • In the top of the second, Holy Cross regained the lead as Russo scored when freshman Cam Meyer reached on a fielding error.
  • The Black Knights responded in the bottom of the third, as Hurtubise notched an RBI single to bring home Anfernee Crompton.
  • In the fourth, Army West Point took control of the lead with an RBI single from Drake Titus to give them a 3-2 advantage.

GAME TWO

Holy Cross scored the first run of the game in the sixth inning, but ultimately took a narrow 2-1 loss to the Black Knights in game two. Meyer scored the lone run for the Crusaders, while freshman David Kale picked up the only RBI. Titus led the offense for Army West Point, batting 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Junior Danny Barlok took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in three innings of relief. Freshman Liam Dvorak pitched five scoreless innings in his start, posting four strikeouts while allowing five hits. Matt Ball earned the win, allowing one run on four hits in seven innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After five scoreless innings, the Crusaders broke the tie as Meyer scored off a double from Kale after reaching base on a fielding error.
  • Dvorak and the Holy Cross defense allowed just five hits and held the Black Knights scoreless through five innings. Army West Point then responded in the bottom of the sixth, as Titus notched an RBI double to score a pair of runs and give his team the 2-1 lead.
  • Barlok and the Crusaders' defense allowed just one hit in the next two innings, but were unable to find a tying run on offense.

UP NEXT

  • Holy Cross returns to action tomorrow, April 29, as the Crusaders conclude their weekend series at Army West Point with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
