NORMAN, Okla. – The Holy Cross baseball team fell to Oklahoma 11-5 in the Crusaders' final game of the weekend at L. Dale Mitchell Field. 

Senior Thomas Russo hit 2-for-3 while scoring run for Holy Cross (1-5), while sophomore Austin Masel also had a strong game at the plate with a run and an RBI while batting 2-for-4. Senior Cam O'Neill and sophomore Alex Volpi each registered a run and an RBI while tallying one hit. Freshman Cam Meyer also drove in a run while sophomore Chris Rinaldi crossed the plate once as well. The Oklahoma (3-4) offense was led by Cade Harris, who batted 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Cade Cavalli also had a solid performance, hitting 2-for-2 two runs and two runs scored.

Junior Declan Cronin was credited with the loss after allowing eight runs through 4.1 innings while recording five strikeouts. Ryan Madded earned the win for the Sooners, allowing no runs through 2.1 innings pitched and tossing three strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Oklahoma got the scoring started in the bottom of the first, as Harris and Brandon Zaragoza each found their way across the plate.
  • After the Sooners added another run off a sacrifice fly in the third, Holy Cross responded with a big fourth inning that included four runs on five hits. O'Neill, Volpi, Meyer and sophomore Riley Livingston each drove in a run as the Crusaders surged to take a 4-3 lead.
  • Oklahoma regained its advantage in the fourth inning, posting four more runs while tallying three hits.
  • In the top of the fifth, Holy Cross threatened to score with the bases loaded off two hits and a fielder's choice, but they were unable to bring a runner across the plate.
  • The Sooners added one more run in the bottom of the fifth, then extended their lead with three runs on three hits in the seventh inning.
  • The Crusaders added a run in the top of the ninth as Masel hit a sacrifice fly to score Rinaldi, but they were unable to cut the deficit any further.

UP NEXT

  • Holy Cross returns to action this Saturday, March 3, as the Crusaders play the first of three games at Mercer with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
