HOUSTON, Texas. – The Holy Cross baseball team fell to #24 Houston in 10 innings of play, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Schroeder Park.

Senior Cam O'Neill led the Crusaders' (1-2) offense, batting 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Senior Thomas Russo hit 1-for-3 and scored a run for Holy Cross. Sophomore Austin Masel and freshman Peter Dudunakis also posted hits for the Crusaders. Houston (2-1) was led by Cooper Coldiron, who batted 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Landon Etzel also had a strong day at the plate, hitting 2-for-2 with a run scored. 

Kyle Ott was credited with the win for Houston, pitching one inning in relief with three strikeouts. Freshman Liam Dvorak was credited with the loss, allowing one run on two hits after posting a pair of strikeouts. Junior Declan Cronin started for Holy Cross, allowing one unearned run on four hits while notching three strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cougars were the first team on the board in the bottom of the second. After Ron Brown led off with a single to left center, he found his way home after Kyle Lovelace reached on a field error.
  • Holy Cross responded in the fourth inning with a pair of runs. After Russo was hit by a pitch, O'Neill homered to left field to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead.
  • In the fifth inning Houston loaded the bases, but sophomore Zane Hedaya took over on the mound for Holy Cross and struck out the final batter to keep it a 2-1 game.
  • The Cougars threatened with the bases loaded in the seventh, but junior Danny Barlok posted a strikeout to end the inning and maintain the lead.
  • Houston found a tying run in the eighth inning, as Coldiron hit a solo home run to left field to make it a 2-2 game.
  • The Cougars clinched the win in the bottom of the 10th inning, as Coldiron singled through the left side to bring home Etzel from second.

UP NEXT

  • Holy Cross returns to action this Friday, Feb. 23, as the Crusaders face Valparaiso and Oklahoma in a doubleheader in Norman, Okla. With game one beginning at 1:00 p.m. eastern.
