HOUSTON, Texas. – The Holy Cross baseball team fell to #24 Houston by a score of 7-1 in the second game of their weekend series with the Cougars on Saturday night.

Sophomore Austin Masel led the Crusaders' (1-1) offense, batting 2-for-4 on the night. Senior Thomas Russo hit 1-for-3 and scored the lone run for Holy Cross. Sophomore Chris Rinaldi and freshman Peter Dudunakis also registered hits for the Crusaders. Jared Triolo led Houston (1-1) at the plate, batting 3-for-4 on the night. Lael Lockhart had very productive night for the Cougars, hitting 2-for-5 while racking up a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. 

Aaron Fletcher grabbed the win for Houston, allowing no runs on two hits through 5.0 innings pitched while tossing six strikeouts. Freshman Garret Keough was credited with the loss after allowing four runs in relief. Junior Pat McGowan started for Holy Cross, allowing no runs on two hits through 4.0 innings and throwing five strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After four and a half scoreless innings, Houston was the first team on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Lockhart brought in the first run with an RBI double to left field, then found his way to home plate on a wild pitch.
  • Holy Cross responded with a run in the top of the sixth, as Russo scored on a wild pitch after being walked and advancing on a single from Masel and a passed ball.
  • Houston put together a strong sixth inning offensively, adding five runs on four hits. The Cougars threatened to add more with the bases still loaded, but freshman Kyle Johnson forced Drew Minter to fly out and end the inning.
  • The Crusaders loaded the bases a pair of hits and a walk, but Houston's defense managed to hold off the Crusaders and maintain their 7-1 advantage.

  • Holy Cross wraps up its weekend series at Houston tomorrow, Jan. 18, with the first pitch slated for 2:00 p.m. eastern.
