NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The Holy Cross men's hockey team was defeated by Niagara, 6-3. The Purple Eagles tallied a four goal second period to take the lead. Anthony Vincent marked a career-high with two assists. Holy Cross falls to 1-6-0 and 1-3-0 in league action. Niagara improves to 4-5-0 and 4-3-0 in Atlantic Hockey.

 

The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead in the first period as the defense continued to generate offense. Midway through the period, Mitch Collett tapped in a rebound after a Johnny Coughlin point shot. Less than two minutes later, Charlie Barrow scored from the blueline to give Holy Cross the lead.

 

Niagara cut the Crusaders lead with 59 seconds to play in the opening period. The Purple Eagles continued their scoring as they tallied a power play goal nearly five minutes into the middle frame. Niagara caught Holy Cross in a change and capitalized on a two-on-one at the midway point of the second period to take the lead, 3-2.

 

Niagara tallied two more goals in the second period before Holy Cross was able to find the back of the net again. Spencer Trapp scored his first goal of the season from the point with under three minutes to play in the period.

 

The third period saw one final Niagara goal to cap the game a 6-3.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

 

1-0 HC (1st – 10:52): Anthony Vincent moved the puck from the corner to Johnny Coughlin on the point. Coughlin quickly took a shot that bounced off of Niagara's Brain Wilson's pad and to the stick of Mitch Collett. Collett collected the rebound and put the puck past Wilson.

2-0 HC (1st – 12:22): After a scrum on the half wall, Peter Crinella collected the loose puck and circled the top of the slot before feeding Charlie Barrow on the point. Barrow lifted a shot from the blueline that bounced in front and into the net.

2-1 NIA (1st – 19:01): Kris Spriggs rushed up the boards and took an off angle shot that snuck just under the crossbar.

2-2 NIA (2nd – 4:59): Jared Brandt sent a shot from the point that bounced around the slot and in.

3-2 NIA (2nd – 9:04): The Purple Eagles got a two-on-one chance as they caught the Crusaders in a line change. Kris Spriggs made a quick deke at the top of the crease to score.

4-2 NIA (2nd – 14:31): Noah Delmas wristed a shot from the slot while rushing the zone.

5-2 NIA (2nd – 16:46): Jon Hill took a point shot through traffic.

5-3 HC (2nd – 17:04): Anthony Vincent controlled the puck and started the rush. Michael Laffin settled the puck in the offensive zone and fed Spencer Trapp at the blueline for a slap shot.

6-3 NIA (3rd – 8:16): Johnny Curran took a slap shot on a rush to the top left corner of the net.  

 

NOTES & NUMBERS:

  • Beau Collins made 18 saves.
  • Erik Gordon recorded 11 saves.
  • Vincent marked a career-high with two assists.
  • Collett and Barrow now tie the team-lead with three goals on the season.
  • The Crusaders were outshot, 35-22.
