GAME ONE

Score: Lafayette 10, Holy Cross 7

The Lead: Lafayette defeated the Crusaders with a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders' offense tallied four runs in the top of the first inning off five hits to take a commanding lead. Seniors Bill Schlich and Alex Voitik both hit home runs to bring in a total of three runners, while junior Thomas Russo brought home a fourth run with an RBI double.
  • The Leopards responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to cut Holy Cross' lead to two.
  • In the third inning, junior Cam O'Neill brought home a pair of runs with a double to left field, making it 6-2.
  • Lafayette added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, then tied the game up with two runs in the following inning.
  • O'Neill gave Holy Cross a one-run lead in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to center field.
  • The Leopards tied the game once again with RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Lafayette won the game with a three-run homer over left field fence, sealing the 10-7 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Lafayette outhit the Crusaders, 10-9.
  • Both teams left six runners on base.
  • Senior George Capen took the loss, allowing three runs in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Connor Jones earned the win, allowing no runs on one hit in 2.2 innings.

Location: Easton, Pa. (Kamine Stadium)
The Lead: Sophomore Kellen McCormick went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, but Holy Cross fell to Lafayette by a score of 10-9 in game two on Sunday. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross notched two runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead as Russo scored off an error and McCormick brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Crusaders made it 5-0 in the third inning, tallying three runs on four hits. McCormick, O'Neill and freshman Alex Volpi all registered RBIs in the inning.
  • Lafayette responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, then tied the game with three runs in the following inning to make it 5-5.
  • The Leopards took their first lead of the game in the fifth inning, adding two runs on three hits to make it 7-5.
  • Holy Cross regained control of the lead in the sixth inning with three runs on two hits. Senior Josh Hassell and O'Neill both brought runners home before sophomore Alex Gionis scored off a failed pickoff attempt.
  • After Holy Cross made it 9-7 with an RBI single from McCormick in the eighth, the Leopards added two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at nine.
  • Lafayette won the game with a run scored off a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Leopards outhit Holy Cross 19-14.
  • The Crusaders left 10 runners on base, while Lafayette left nine.
  • Junior Michael Spada took the loss, allowing one run in the ninth inning.
  • Rob Ewald earned the win, allowing no runs in 1.2 innings pitched.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Crusaders will serve as the number two seed in the Patriot League Tournament, and will host third-seeded Army West Point in the semifinals on May 13-14.
  • Schlich's home run was his third of the season, and the eighth of his career.
  • Voitik registered his fifth home run of the year, and the 11th of his career.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross will return to action this Wednesday, May 3, as the Crusaders host Marist at 5:05 p.m.
