Baseball Splits With Bucknell In First Doubleheader Of Weekend Series

GAME ONE

Score: Holy Cross 5, Bucknell 3

The Lead: With Bucknell leading 3-1, Holy Cross rallied for three runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to take the lead as the Crusaders defeated the Bison 5-3 in the first game on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross posted the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, gaining a 1-0 lead over Bucknell. Junior Thomas Russo singled down the left field line, bringing sophomore Kellen McCormick across home plate.
  • The Bison came back in the top of the third inning to take the lead by tallying three runs.
  • The score remained unchanged until senior Alex Voitik homered to left field in the bottom of the fifth. Shortly after, senior Anthony Critelli doubled to center field to take the lead and bring in two more runs for the Crusaders for a score of 4-3.
  • Holy Cross continued to increase their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single from freshman Chris Rinaldi.
  • In the top of the seventh inning, senior George Capen was brought in to relieve senior Brendan King. He held the Bison scoreless for the final inning as the Crusaders won 5-3.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders outhit the Bison 8-5.
  • Holy Cross and Bucknell each left six runners on base.
  • King earned the win for the Crusaders, allowing three earned runs on five hits in six innings pitched.
  • Connor Van Hoose took the loss for Bucknell, allowing four earned runs and one unearned run on eight hits in 5.2 innings pitched.

GAME TWO

Score: Bucknell 11, Holy Cross 5

Records: Holy Cross (16-21, 9-5), Bucknell (18-21, 9-5)

Time: 4:46 p.m.

Location: Worcester, Mass. (Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field)

The Lead: Danny Rafferty led the Bison with three RBIs as Holy Cross fell to Bucknell 11-5 in the second game on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Bucknell earned the first run of the game in the top of the third on a throwing error, and scored again shortly after on a ground ball to the shortstop to bring the score to 2-0. The Bison then continued their scoring streak into the fourth inning, scoring four runs, including a solo home run by Luke Johnson.
  • Bucknell then scored three runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to bring their lead up to 11-0.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning freshman Jared Enders singled up the middle to advance Rinaldi to second and freshman Alex Volpi to home plate, to put the Crusaders on the board. Senior Josh Hassell then hit another single up the middle to continue the advancement and push Rinaldi across home plate to decrease Bucknell's lead to 11-2.
  • Holy Cross continued to rally in the bottom of the eighth inning as junior Dan Vucovich sent a three-run homer over the left field fence, bringing the score to 11-5.
  • In the bottom of the ninth Enders doubled then advanced to third on a balk, but the Crusaders were unable to reach home plate and the final score remained at 11-5 in favor of Bucknell.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Bucknell outhit Holy Cross 14-9.
  • The Crusaders left eight runners on base, while the Bison left seven.
  • Mike Castellani earned the win for Bucknell, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings pitched.
  • Senior Phil Reese took the loss for the Crusaders, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits in five innings pitched.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Voitik's home run was his third of the season, and the ninth of his career.
  • Vucovich hit his first career home run in game two.
  • Capen earned his second save of the year, totaling four in his career.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross will continue its series against Bucknell with another doubleheader on Sunday, April 23 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field in Worcester, Mass. at 1:05 p.m. The Crusaders will also be celebrating Senior Day and ALS Awareness Day at the game.
