The Lead: The Crusaders defeated Navy 6-3 in their first Patriot League game of the season on Sunday afternoon in Providence.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Holy Cross was first on the board in the bottom of the second inning, as junior Thomas Russo singled through the left side to score classmate Cam O'Neill.
- After senior Brendan King pitched five scoreless innings, the Midshipmen took control of the lead by adding a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the sixth.
- The Crusaders responded in the bottom of the inning with five runs on four hits to gain a commanding lead. Senior Anthony Critelli, classmate Alex Voitik (2) and Russo all notched runs batted in during the inning.
- Navy added a run in the top of the seventh, but they were unable to overcome the deficit set by Holy Cross.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Both teams registered eight hits in game one.
- Navy left seven runners on base, while Holy Cross left three.
- King earned the win, allowing three runs on eight hits through 6.2 innings pitched.
- Noah Song took the loss for Navy, allowing five runs on six hits.
- Russo led the Crusaders' offense, hitting 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
GAME TWO
Score: Navy 11, Holy Cross 8

The Lead: Holy Cross came up short to Navy by a score of 11-8 in game two on Sunday, splitting their doubleheader with the Midshipmen.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Navy jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, adding two runs on a pair of hits.
- In the bottom of the second, Holy Cross answered with a run off and RBI double from Russo.
- The Crusaders took control of the lead in the third inning, adding two more runs on two hits as freshman Austin Masel and Critelli hit back-to-back solo home runs.
- Navy responded in the top of the fourth with a tying run to make it 3-3.
- The Midshipmen added four runs on four hits in the sixth inning, and another run in the seventh to give them an 8-3 advantage.
- Holy Cross added two runs in the bottom of the seventh, as senior Bill Schlich and classmate Josh Hassell both drove in runs.
- After Navy made it 9-5 in the top of the eighth, the Crusaders added three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-8 as Hassell (2) and freshman Chris Rinaldi were able to bring runners home.
- The Midshipmen made it 11-8 in the top of the ninth to secure the final score.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Navy outhit the Crusaders 17-14.
- The Midshipmen left 10 runners on base, while Holy Cross left 8.
- George Coughlin earned the win for Navy, allowing four runs on seven hits.
- Sophomore Declan Cronin took the loss, allowing four runs on three hits.
- Rinaldi went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Senior George Capen earned his first save of the season, and the third of his career in game one.
- Critelli's home run was his fourth of the season, and the 20th of his career. He is now tied for third all-time in program history for career homers.
- Masel's home run was his second of the year.
UP NEXT:
- Holy Cross will return to action tomorrow, April 3, as the Crusaders wrap up their series with Navy with a doubleheader at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass. at 11:30 a.m.
