The Lead: The Crusaders combined for five home runs as Holy Cross defeated UMass 15-5 on Wednesday night at the New England Baseball Complex.

 HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross was the first team to get on the board, as senior Anthony Critelli and freshman Austin Masel each brought home a run in the third to make it 2-0.
  • The Minutemen responded with a run in the fifth inning, and tied the game at 2-2 with another run in the sixth.
  • The Crusaders regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, as Critelli hit a solo shot home run to left field and sophomore Kellen McCormick hit a two-run homer to make it 5-3.
  • UMass added three runs on three hits in the top of the seventh to tie the game up at 5-5.
  • In the bottom of the eighth inning, Holy Cross posted 10 runs on seven hits to take a commanding control of the game. Junior Cam O'Neill (2) and Masel both notched home runs in the inning. In addition, Freshman Chris Rinaldi, and senior Josh Hassell also registered RBIs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders outhit UMass 13-9.
  • The Minutemen left 15 runners on base, while Holy Cross left five.
  • Junior Michael Spada earned the win on the mound for Holy Cross, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings in relief while tossing a pair of strikeouts.
  • Casey Aubin took the loss for UMass, allowing five runs on five hits.
  • Masel led the Crusaders with four RBIs while batting 3-for-5.
  • Eleven different Crusaders scored runs in the win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • This was the most runs scored by Holy Cross in a game since March 23, 2014, when the Crusaders defeated Yale 16-6.
  • Masel now has nine multiple-hit games on the year, the most on the team.
  • McCormick has registered at least one hit in his last seven games.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross will be back in action this Saturday, March 25, as the Crusaders take on Yale on the road at 1:00 p.m.
