Field Hockey Defeats Fairfield, 4-3 In Overtime

THE BASICS

  • The Lead: Junior forward Maureen Connolly notched the game-winning goal at 8:13 in the first overtime period to give Holy Cross a 4-3 victory over Fairfield on Wednesday night in Worcester.

 HOW IT HAPPENED

    • Fairfield began the game with a strong offensive push, notching three shots on net in the first five minutes, but freshman goalkeeper Marcia LaPlante stood tall to keep it scoreless.
    • The Stags were the first team on the board, as Ann Burgoyne found the back of the net in the 16th minute of play, making it 1-0 in their favor.
    • Sophomore forward Suzanne Noone tied the game up for Holy Cross, knocking in a shot off a cross from sophomore midfielder Emily Loprete in the 24th minute.
    • The Crusaders gained their first lead of the night just two minutes later, as Connolly notched her first goal of the game off an assist from senior midfielder Lauren Sutherland.
    • In the 41st minute, Fairfield tied the game up as Erin Buckley scored off a penalty corner to make it a 2-2 game.
    • The Crusaders responded in the next minute with a go-ahead goal from Loprete, as she tipped in a pass from Connolly.
    • Fairfield tied the game in the 55th minute, as Maddi Haberl made it a 3-3 game with a shot from the top of the circle.
    • Early on in the overtime period, the Stags were able to sneak a ball past LaPlante, but the goal was waved off for a kicking infraction.
    • In the 79th minute, Loprete sent a long pass to the front of the net to find Connolly, who was able to tap the ball past the Fairfield netminder for the game-winner.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • LaPlante made nine saves in goal for Holy Cross to earn the win.
  • Caitlin Bennett made one save for the Stags.
  • Shots were 16-9 in Fairfield's favor.
  • Connolly and Loprete led Holy Cross with three shot attempts each.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Connolly now has nine goals for the season and 25 for her career. She now stands alone at 10th all-time for career goals in program history.
  • Connolly has notched at least one point in her last 12 games.
  • Noone's goal was her first of the season.
  • LaPlante improves to 3-1 on the season.
