The Lead: Senior Nick Lovullo (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) went 1-for-3 with a home run, as the Crusaders defeated Lafayette 6-5 in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Hanover Insurance Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, as Lovullo hit a solo shot home run over the left field fence.
- Holy Cross would make it 2-0 in the fifth inning, as Lovullo hit a successful sacrifice bunt that scored freshman Travis Cloney (Wall, N.J.).
- Lafayette responded with two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game up.
- The Crusaders regained the lead in the bottom of the inning as junior Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) hit a strong single to right field that brought home sophomore Thomas Russo (Weston, Mass.) and junior Alex Voitik (Shorewood, Ill.), making it 4-2.
- The Leopards gained their first lead of the game as they added three runs in the top of the seventh inning to make it 5-4 in their favor.
- In the bottom of the seventh, junior Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) hit an RBI single to tie the game up. Then, with the bases loaded, Russo was walked to bring junior pinch runner Jon Escobar (Inverness, Ill.) home and end the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Holy Cross outhit the Leopards 8-6.
- The Crusaders left eight runners on base, while Lafayette left three.
- Senior pitcher Sean Gustin (Stoneham, Mass.) earned the win after allowing one run (none earned) on one hit in the final inning.
- Connor McMahon took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in 0.2 relief innings pitched.
- Lovullo led the Crusaders' offense with 2 RBI and a run scored. He also led the team with four putout assists.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Lovullo's home run was his third of the season, and the seventh of his career.

The Lead: Voitik went 1-for-2 with a home run as the Crusaders took a narrow loss to Lafayette in game two of Sunday's doubleheader in Worcester, Mass.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Voitik got the scoring started with a two-run homer over the left field fence in the second inning.
- The Leopards would respond in the sixth inning, adding two runs on three hits to tie the game up.
- Lafayette scored another run in the eighth inning to take its first lead of the game, 3-2.
- The Crusaders threatened to tie the game up in the bottom of the eighth. Lovullo and sophomore Cam O'Neill (Lynn, Mass.) notched back-to-back base hits with two outs, but Holy Cross could not bring the runs home.
- The Leopards notched one more run in the top of the ninth to give them their 4-2 lead.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Lafayette outhit the Crusaders 11-5.
- The Leopards left five runners on base, while Holy Cross left four.
- Junior Joe Cravero (Hanover, N.H.) took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits in3.2 innings pitched.
- Mitch Leeds earned the win for Lafayette, allowing two runs on three hits in seven innings pitched.
- Voitik led the Crusaders' offense, notching two RBI and a run scored off his home run.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Voitik's home run was the sixth of his career.
SENIOR DAY:
- Prior to Sunday's doubleheader, Holy Cross honored Lovullo, Gustin, Bobby Indeglia (North Kingston, R.I.), Connor Perry (Haverhill, Mass.) and Shane Sandoval (Westerly, R.I.) for their hard work and dedication on and off the field these past four years.
UP NEXT:
- Holy Cross will host Lesley in a doubleheader next Sunday, May 8 at 1:05 p.m. before hosting the Patriot League Semifinal round at Hanover Insurance Park on Saturday, May 14.
