The Lead: The Crusaders dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to Dartmouth on Wednesday afternoon at Biondi Park in Hanover, N.H.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Freshman pitcher Pat McGowan (Wellesley, Mass.) had a strong start to the game for Holy Cross, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings and allowing just three hits while dealing three strikeouts.
- The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Junior Josh Hassell (Tulsa, Okla.) got on base in the second at-bat of the inning with a double to right center, and found his way to third on a fielding error by the right fielder. In the following at-bat, sophomore Thomas Russo (Weston, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to bring home Hassell for the score.
- The Big Green tied the game up in the sixth inning with an RBI single, and gained the 2-1 lead in the seventh with an unearned run scored off an error.
- In the ninth inning, junior Bill Schlich (Massapequa, N.Y.) reached base on an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Travis Cloney (Wall, N.J.), but the Crusaders were unable to bring him home.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Dartmouth outhit the Crusaders 7-4.
- Both teams left six runners on base in the game.
- McGowan pitched the first 4.1 innings of the game, allowing no runs on three hits, as freshman Danny Barlok (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took the loss after pitching two innings in relief and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits.
- Chris Burkholder earned the win, pitching three innings in relief and allowing no runs on one hit.
- Junior Anthony Critelli (Holmdel, N.J.) led the Crusaders with 13 putouts.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- McGowan's start was the first of his career. He has allowed no runs in 7.1 innings pitched in two appearances this season.
