Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader With Lafayette

  • The Lead: Senior outfielder Bobby Indeglia hit two homers and drove in four runs as the Holy Cross baseball team tallied two wins in a doubleheader with Lafayette at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field. The Crusaders won the first game 2-0, before coming out victorious the nightcap 10-9.

 

HOW GAME 1 HAPPENED:

  • The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run double by junior outfielder Josh Hassell.
  • Junior outfielder Bill Schlich started the inning with a single to right field, then moved to second while junior catcher Alex Voitik reached on a fielder's choice.
  • After a sacrifice bunt by sophomore third baseman Thomas Russo put the runners on second and third, Hassell delivered the big hit to score the only two runs of the game.
  • Junior righthanded pitcher Brendan King threw a seven inning complete game shutout for Holy Cross, recording seven strikeouts while allowing only two hits.

 

HOW GAME 2 HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first, on a RBI double by junior first baseman Anthony Critelli and a sacrifice fly by Voitik.
  • In the bottom of the second, Indeglia delivered a three-run homer to give the Crusaders a 5-0 advantage.
  • Lafayette scored its first run of the day in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Steven Cohen.
  • Holy Cross responded with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to expand its lead to 8-1.
  • Schlich had a two-run homer in the inning, with Hassell adding a sacrifice fly.
  • The Lafayette offense then came to life with eight runs in the top of the sixth inning, with a Leopards pulling in front 9-8 following a two-run homer by Andrew Landolfi.
  • The Crusaders tied the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh inning on a solo home run by Hassell.
  • Ingeglia then led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a solo homer to put Holy Cross back in front for good.
  • Freshman righthanded pitcher  Danny Barlok earned the victory in relief, tossing two shutout innings.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Hassell drove in four runs on the day, while going three-for-five with two doubles and a home run.
  • Russo was also three-for-five on the day with a  double and a run scored.
  • The Crusaders outhit the Leopards 18-14 over the course of the two games.

 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • At 13-5, Holy Cross remains one game behind Navy (14-4) in the Patriot League standings with two games left to play.

 

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross and Lafayette will conclude their weekend series tomorrow, May 1, with a doubleheader beginning at 10:05 a.m.
