Holy Cross Drops Two Games At Navy

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Holy Cross junior outfielder Josh Hassell had a pair of hits, but the Holy Cross baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to Navy at Max Bishop Stadium. The Midshipmen won the first game 9-0, then captured the night cap 4-2.

HOW GAME 1 HAPPENED:

  • Navy opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI groundout by Scott Koscho.
  • The Midshipmen made the score 5-0 in the third inning, with Adrian Chinnery, Stephen Born, Sean Trent and Koscho all driving in runs.
  • Navy added two more runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to conclude the scoring.
  • Noah Song threw a complete game, one-hit shutout for the Midshipmen.

HOW GAME 2 HAPPENED:

  • Holy Cross opened the second game by jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
  • Senior shortstop Nick Lovullo led off the game with a double, and eventually scored on a passed ball.
  • Navy claimed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, on a solo home run by Chinnery and an RBI single by Nick Paglialonga.
  • The Midshipmen made the score 4-1 in the fifth inning, when Trent had an RBI single and another run scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Crusaders cut into the lead in the sixth inning, as sophomore second baseman Cam O'Neill singled and came around to score on an RBI single by sophomore catcher Dan Vucovich.
  • But neither team would score again, as Navy held on for the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The two teams combined for only three extra base hits in the two games, including the double by Lovullo.
  • Junior first baseman Anthony Critelli reached base four times on the day, drawing four walks.
  • Senior righthanded pitcher Sean Gustin threw two innings of hitless, scoreless relief in game two.
  • Chinnery led the Midshipmen by going four-for-seven on the day.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Holy Cross and Navy split the weekend series by winning two games each.
  • The Crusaders and the Midshipmen are now tied in the Patriot League standings at 2-2.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Tuesday, April 5, when it travels to Boston College for a 3:00 p.m. game.
